My yellow lab puppy has recently started gulping his water down so fast that he seemed "drunk" after drinking. I have tried everything I can think of to get him to slow down but nothing seems to work. He sticks in entire face in the bowl and seems to be "biting" the water and gulping it down. Since I can not continue to let him do this I have had to resort to pouring the smallest amount of water into his bowl at a time and sit there with him while he drinks. Each time he drinks the water I have him sit while I pour more in so that he has to take a break in between. Obliviously, this is not the best scenario but it is all that is working so far. Any ideas? Has anyone else had this problem before?
Also, before anyone asks...he has been to the vet and been given a clean bill of health. There are no medical reasons for him to suddenly be doing this. I have not changed the location of his bowl or the feeding time. I would appreciate and suggestions anyone might have. This puppy is my son's service dog and my son would be lost without him. Thanks in advance.

Hi we bought Ziva our 8 week pup one of these .....http://petshop.co.uk/Road-Refresher-Non-Spill-Water-Bowl?

It certainly slows her down as you only get small amount at top of bowl but as she drinks the water comes up if that makes sense purchased from pet shop bowl .

Hi, did you mention his fast drinking to the vet? If so, what did the vet recommend!
There are lots of reasons why dogs drink fast - medical issues/illness, dehydration, dry food diet, medication amongst a few. He might of eaten something that has a high salt content which will make him extremely thirsty.

Why do you think this is a problem? I mean, when you say he is "drunk" what do you mean, exactly? That the volume of water he drinks is too much and affects him in some way?

My dog who is a bit on the er...enthusiastic for life end of the spectrum, drinks with practically his whole head in the bowl, all of his snout underwater, and makes so much mess you'd think there was a breaching blue whale in his water bowl. Seriously. I just leave towels down covering the whole of the kitchen floor on a more or less permanent basis. It's easier that way....but I've never thought that there was anything wrong with him (and indeed there isn't).
