My 4 month old dog puppy is very hyperactive,afraid of nothing and could easily become a problem. Vet suggested raw food diet but that seemed to make him worse so have gone back to Skinners Puppy dry food.He has free access to garden and is now walked for about 25 mins a day only to protect his joint development but is this enough ?He is the only dog we have now so nobody to play with. Any ideas?
Hi and welcome to the forum. What's you pup's name? What colour is he? It sounds as if you have a pretty normal puppy - they do tend to have lots of energy! With your walk, is most of the walk on or off lead? You mention that it is around 25 minutes, is this to keep in line with "5 minute rule"? Some suggest that it's one walk per day while others hive their pups 2 walks per day based upon the rule. Worth considering an extra walk if you can. Do you play with him in the garden and/or in the house? Play is a very important interaction and also helps to tire hour puppy . You don't mention any training sessions. A 5 -10 minute training session several times a day will also help to tire your pup. The focus for training is very tiring. Personally, I wouldn't let him have free access to the garden as it is very easy for young pups to get into mischief or harm themselves eating something they shouldn't. Welcome to you! Our present pup, Twiglet is also 4 months old and totally hyperactive - this is very normal! Skinners is a great food and, personally, I would stick with it. I agree shat short training sessions are brilliant for tiring the pupster out
Hi and welcome to the forum. Have you read "The happy puppy" book? I am sure that would help you with your young puppy. I would play with him the garden, it would also help you bond with him.
Hi and welcome . I echo the above comments regarding training sessions. You could do several different things when they are young. I taught paw, sit, wait, leave, down, stand etc. it really helped tire her out as it mentally stimulates them.
Thank you all for advice.Will persevere with Zac.He is not unsupervised in garden and has good call back so is off lead most of time on Forest daily.He weighed 14.30 kg at Vets today and Vet seemed pleased with his progress. Will load photo when I work out how.
Hi and welcome from me. It does sound pretty normal. Training sessions are great for tiring them out. There is a book called Learning Games by Kay Laurence that has lots of activities for dogs of different ages and abilities to work through. the games will challenge them mentally and sometimes physically, too. It does assume a basic understanding of clicker training, so you can look through the articles on the main site (http://www.thelabradorsite.com/clicker-training-whats-it-all-about/) and then I'd recommend another Kay Laurence book, Clicker Training, The Perfect Foundation. I think you made a typo in his weight, otherwise he'd be the smallest 4-month-old Lab in history To post photos, you need to use a service like Photobucket, Flickr or Imgur to host the photo, then you copy the BBCode (which looks like [ IMG]....[/IMG]) into your post on here.
