Hi guys, Bob is being neutered on Monday. We will get him a collar for when we aren't around etc and for night times. Question, how did your pups sleep with the collar on at night? Should we expect some disturbed nights? The cone seems very hard to me and maybe more uncomfortable for sleeping. So I'm wondering whether to get in inflatable one. What are your thoughts and experiences? Thank you Lou x
There is a thread on this here: http://thelabradorforum.com/forum/n...brador-health/4836-the-cone-of-shame#post4836 I used a comfy cone with Charlie after both his cruciate ops, and he wore a cone for about a month each time (they were very big wounds to heal up). I had no trouble with it, but had to measure up very carefully to make sure I got one that was long enough and allow for the fact the dog can push his collar back on his neck a bit. So you need to measure from the furthest back a dog can wear a collar to the end of his snout with his neck extended and then allow an extra margin for safety. I was very happy with it. He just used it as a pillow when he slept, and didn't seem bothered by it at all, not one little bit.
Juno was absolutely fine sleeping in her cone after her spey and her elbow operation. From reading threads though I seems that some are fine and others fuss
Thank you I called the vets and they said they had cone collars there. I may see how he goes. Bob is a fairly chilled out pup so I'm hoping he'll be OK bless him. x
I used the inflatable buster collar with Willow. She couldn't reach her spay site with it on and wasn't bothered by it in the slightest. I only used it when I wasn't there (very, very short times) and at night time, even though I slept with her because she was so miserable, bless her. I bought it in advance and did plenty of desensitisation with it before having to use it "in anger".

Oh good. Measure up carefully, because you don't want the dog to be able to get his snout passed the end. I also took a plastic cone from the vet as a back up, if Charlie had ever shown signs of being able to get to his wound, I'd have put a plastic one on. But that never happened.
I went with large.. although I measured the distance a few times and it varied depending on how I was doing it. But all measurements came up within the range for the large one. It's arriving tomorrow so we'll have tomorrow and all day Sunday to get him used to it with some yummy treats. But yes good plan to get a back up one from the vet as well just in case of any problems. I won't be sleeping with Bob as he's in a crate downstairs in the dining room! But he'll be having plenty of cuddles during the day. Just need to work out a way of keeping Arthur away from him during his recovery.. they like their bundling play time so he'll need to be monitored VERY carefully!
I didn't use a collar and didn't need to do so, have had three dogs castrated and five bitches spayed, no collar for any of them. I never even thought about a collar and the vet never seems to think they are necessary.
