Is there a risk of lungworm and heartworm from slugs and snails in the uk? If so how big? My 7 month old dog has chewed a few slugs up when younger and also licks the floor where there are clear slim trails. Should I treat him for lungworm/heartworm? If so what is the best medication? Or is it a load of who har to make money out of you? Do you treat yours? Should I? Thanks guys!
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Yes, definately a risk of lungworm from slugs and snails in the UK . Most wormers dont cover lungworm but I think Milbermax wormer does , its definately worth asking your Vet about giving this , its a real risk especially if your little one is prone to licking or eating them x
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Advocate works for the usual stuff plus lungworm and that's we use, but I know that not everyone approves of Advocate on environmental grounds.
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Does advocate treat all other worms aswell then?
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? I use advocate, but was unaware of environmental objections? Off to google it...
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Do you treat for lungworm and heartworm every 3 month same as normal worms? Cheers EDIT ; how do I get a prescription from the vets to buy it cheaper offline too?
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Yes, I believe so , re the prescription you have to ask your Vet for one, they will charge for it but it sometimes still works out cheaper in the long run
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Ok I have been reading up on this on google and to me it looks like people are being scammed by this. Fenbendazole kills lungworms. Drontal plus contains febentel which is converted into Fenbendazole and oxfendazole by the liver. So drontal plus will kill lungworm? And gaurdia is also treated byFenbendazole isn't it?
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2386&S=0&EVetID=3001459 Look at the treatment used for this, then look at drontal plus ingredients. How long do you treat the dog for if you suspect they have lungworm?
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Something else I have spotted too! ;D Heartworm is also treated with praziquantel which is one of the active ingredients in milbemax. Well drontal plus also contains that ingredient. So drontal plus appears to also treat heartworm and lungworm and guardia . But how long do you give the wormer for if you suspect them to have it? How often do you treat? EDIT: http://quizlet.com/15026838/benzimidazoles-flash-cards/ here is a link stating that febentel "Is converted to fenbendazole and oxfendazole once inside the animal" quote taken from link provided
Re: The risk of heartworm/lungworm from slugs and snails? Dunno, I'm afraid. Have wondered a few times why there seems to be so many treatments, and certainly seems to be an overlap between Advocate and Advantix (both of which I use to give complete coverage + worm treatment) but I'm afraid I haven't researched in any depth...perhaps ask the vet?
