Hi all, I'm looking for any advice on how I can help my pup feel better with a runny tummy. First to deal with the cause: We have made a few changes to Tatti's diet recently, we brought her down to 3 meals a day a week or so ago and noticed at that time we had been slightly under feeding her so increased the amount of food we were giving her. Not wanting to over face her with huge meals we have only increased meal size slightly and giver her all the extra food when training or in kongs. We have also started to introduce a new food. She was on skinners puppy (for feild and trial) but she is not a working dog so after LOTs of research we have bought some Orejin puppy (large dog). I have just been putting a handful of the new kibble in her food allowance and we use it in the training ration too so she is not getting too much. I started this 4 days ago and all was fine until today. I should also mention that yesterday she had been playing in the park with another dog and as we were leaving I noticed the poor thing was having some real trouble with watery poo. So, I'm not 100% sure what is causing it. I also have her a couple f treats last night that she has never had before and they are not specifically for puppies (it says from 4 months and she is exactly 4 months today). Solution She seems fine in herself BUT she is taking longer to settle today and is whining a bit. I sat down next to her earlier and she climbed on my lap straight away (she hasn't done this in a couple of weeks), curled up, whined a bit then fell asleep. Is there anything I should be doing to help her feel more comfortable. assuming this is just either too much food or a doggy bug and nothing serious that is. Is it still ok to take her to the park? Should i give her anything? Avoid anything. Looking at her now, happily sleeping on her back at my feet, I think she is fine, but if I can help the recovery along a bit that would be good
If she is whining a bit, she may have a bit of a painful tummy? If she was mine I would phone vet for advice. Re puppy food for large dog - I happened to be reading another forum with a Lab who had painful elbows and the orthopaedic specialist recommended not feeding puppy food as it can cause the pup growing too quickly - just saying! Maybe puppy food for regular size?
You sound like you are changing her food over carefully enough .I would be giving the vet a call too, especially if you noticed a dog she was in close contact with had quite a runny and you could ask what they think about what Stacia has mentioned.Dexter was really unsettled as a young dog 5-7 months old and when he was properly upset I used to feed him really sloppy rice and boiled chicken ....
A few things can cause it, maybe too much exercise in the park she is only 16 weeks? In my experience feeding too much can cause a runny tummy. I do not adhere to the manufacturers amounts maybe 10% less. I see that you were not feeding enough and increased the amount slightly but still giving the extra in treats? go back to original amount to see if that helps. If it continues for a couple of days phone the vet for advice. Puppy food for a large dog should be fine, I thought that puppy food for medium and small breeds has higher protein, i,e faster growth. Sue.
I would be checking her out st the vet if she's whining and uncomfortable. Best to be safe with little ones. My vet has a scientific approach to changing foods which has always worked with Juno with no problems. Day 1 75% original food 25% new, Day 3 50% of Day 5 25% oroginal and 75% new and Day 7 100% new food. Percentages see for the relevant amount of each food.
Thanks all, She is quite a whiney pup naturally (she was lay down playing with a toy the other day and whined when it rolled just out of reach) and really doesn't seem that bad in herself. The whining has also stopped now. At the moment it has just been one loose stool so I'll monitor her for now. Introducing new food has been slow so unless she has an allergy to something in it, I'm more inclined to think it is either too much food, she's eaten something that disagrees with her or has something from her friend in the park yesterday. Nothing else has changed, she is still eating (everything), drinking plenty of water, playing and wagging her tail lots. She seems her normal self, just slightly more restless than usual which I suppose is expected if she has a funny tummy, I will keep a close eye on her and maybe reduce her portion size a tad this evening. Is there anything else that helps them out? Peppermint tea helps my human belly- is there an equivalent for dogs? Will let you know if things change- I know when you read these posts you can start to worry about how the dogs are doing. L
I always give Charlie prokolin if he has runny poo - it seems to help. You'd have to check whether it's ok for puppies, but I think it is - at least, my vet gave me some for Charlie when he was still a young pup. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Protexin-Pro-Kolin-Plus-Syringe-30/dp/B003Y3XLH4
Pro-biotic yogurt helps the digestive tract. The dogs love it,we always have some in, nice for us too. Sue.
I had problems with all my dogs when I changed to Orejin they just couldn't tolerate it and had runny poops so i changed back to arden grange and they were fine. My pup also had problems with chicken so I had to cut that out too. They are all fine now.
All seems fine today. She is sleeping fine and tummy seems to be on the mend. Will keep things steady over the next few days to be sure though. I did notice that yesterday she drank a lot of water- much more than usual but again this is back to normal (just after food) today. Perhaps she was a little dehydrated or too hot. Thanks for tips, will certainly keep in mind for next time. Tatti especially thanks those of you who suggested chicken and rice - we didn't get to that yesterday but I know she would LOVE it
My pup Sydney was introduced to Wainwrights at 11 weeks she was fine until at 21 weeks developed runny poo, took her to the vets was put on chicken and rice then back to her wainwrights didn't improve saw another vet who told me to change her to chappie within 24 hours she had normal poo three weeks later we havnt looked back, still got the bag of wainwrights I paid £40 for though!! hope this helps, its a worrying time, any consolation my lab puppy we had some 20 years ago had the same problem with eukaneuba!!
Hi again, I stopped feeding the bits of Orejin and saw an improvement and the reintroduced it with even smaller amounts. This seemed fine at first but today has not been great. She also has much softer poos after I feed her any meat (e.g chicken or turkey) so I wonder if it's just too much protein. I thought it could have been the Turkey last time but her sknners puppy food (that she is fine with) contains Turkey (well ish- it isn't a very high proportion). Do you think it's worth waiting until she's a bit older (she is 17 weeks) and trying again with the Orejin or should we just try another brand? I'm very conscious that skinners is not the best brand out there and we want her to be as healthy as possible so want to feed her on the best food possible.
The best food for your puppy is the one that they thrive on with no tummy problems. If she's fine with Skinners I wouldn't bother changing. Generations of dogs have grown and thrived on diets a lot worse than Skinners.
I agree , feed her on whatever suits her , Skinners is fine, maybe not the very best but a good medium priced food . My two are fed on Skinners duck and rice , both do well on it .
