Hi, we have a 6 month old chocolate lab who is biting a lot, even on the face if he gets the chance. His adult teeth have come through although I can't tell if they're still growing or not but he bites me and my partner all the time, not to intentionally hurt us but playfully and even then it still hurts. Does anyone have any advice on getting him to stop this? Or is it a case of waiting for him to grow out of it? Thanks.
Hello there By about 6 months, the puppy biting stage should have worn off - but possibly in some pups it lasts a bit longer. Or, it may be over excitement, as your pup becomes a teenager. Here is an article on puppy biting: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/labrador-puppies-biting/ Just keep on with the tips in this article. Yes, you now need to train him out of it. Puppy biting is usually over by 6 months, but some dogs are very 'mouthy' all their lives. My Tatze is very mouthy, I have trained her to pick up a toy when she wants to greet us so that we can get close without the licks. We did this by putting a toy in her mouth every time she came for fuss - now she picks up a toy when she sees us coming. My other two pups haven't been mouthy at all - they are all different
Thanks for the replies. He does only tend to do it when he's excited, recently been ignoring him or trying to calm him down without letting him get his mouth near my body. He's learning.
Hi Mark - I've nothing to add to the advice here, just wanted to say hello and welcome! And hang in there - my boy Pongo was a crocopup too, then (quite suddenly) just stopped. The "ignore" thing worked really well for us. Have a good Christmas without too many labrador toothmarks! Rosie (and Pongo)
