In the last couple of days Murphy has started humping (for lack of a better word). He's only 9 weeks old is this normal?!

Don't know - advice on the forum was a firm "NO" - Charlie has only done it the once... So hoping if he never gets in the habit...

Its a very normal thing for pups to do, both male and female ::) Try to distract immediately , remove the " abused " article, firm NO , and distract with another toy or take puppy away from the scene . Whilst it is normal and natural behaviour, you want to try and stem this before it turns into a habit and legs begin to be used , most pups stop if you distract :)

That's great thanks all. I was worried because I thought he was quite young for behaviour like that but that's cool if it's normal :)

That's interesting as Freddie did it to his bed today, he is 12 weeks old. First time I have seen him do it and didn't know what I should do so just completely ignored him and then threw his kong over the other side of the room and he went off to have a chew. Did it again about 10 mins later but was due for a trip to the garden so just walked out the room and called him out. Is that ok or should I intervene a bit more ie saying no sternly etc?

What you are doing sounds fine. If you need to step it up a bit you can say 'no' or 'ah ah' etc and then distract with something else (e.g. throwing the kong as you describe).

Obi (16 months) humps his bed when he is bored ( ::)) and he also wants to hump the sofa cushions at times (which we stop with a firm 'no'). He doesn't hump other dogs or people though, thank goodness.

I wouldn't worry to much. Titan did it starting at 8 weeks old to a stuff animal of his. Now the stuffed animal is always with him in his crate lol. He eventually just stopped doing it as much. It was embarassing because that was the only way he would play in puppy class. lol.

Poppy started humping her big hairy Pyrenean sheepdog friend the other day... I suppose that's a kind of dominance play? Was quite surprised though, didn't realize bitches did that too...
