Charlie has an itchy bum. He keeps trying to lick it (but he can't quite reach). Normal, hard poos etc...nothing obvious to see, but clearly bothering him.

I can't call an emergency vet on boxing day for a dog with an itchy bum! Not even I would do that....I've made sure it's all clean with just water. Anyway, he's been in the sea this morning, so he is all very clean.

What can I do? I can't think of anything I have that might help. Anyway, that's hibiscrub and that's about it. The local shop is open and sells sudocream, I think. Wonder if that would help.

Poor Charlie. Can't really advise on the sudocream except I used to use it on my daughter when she had nappy rash as a baby. Cleared I up in 24 hours but not sure about using it with an unknown cause as it creates a barrier on the skin.

I'd check his anal glands first if I were you and empty them if full as this is probably the commonest cause of an itchy bum. They do also sometimes get a bit of Malassezia over-growing in that area so that may be worth bearing in mind in view of his previous ear issues.

mmm....I did wonder if the ears (just got them cleared up again), gunky eyes and itchy bottom are all related.

I'll pop him to the vet for an anal gland check as soon as they open (don't know how to do that myself unfortunately).
