My girl comes from a mixture of field/show lines from both parents with a breeder whose main interest is breeding dogs of good health and temperament. All her dogs are trained and go to visit the local care home and are comfortable around children, the elderly and people with disabilities. She has 4 boys herself so has a busy life, made more so since she trained as a Counsellor using dogs with children/adults with conditi0ns such as Autism (one of her boys is autistic). Holidays and weekends she has residential sessions and the children assist with the care of the dogs (and puppies if there are any). She also has goats, sheep, ponies, donkeys and chickens around the house. Although Juno has ED I can not fault her temperament and solid foundation of socialisation from her breeder.
Thanks all for the warm welcome and advice. I should have said we live in the UK. South East. We previously owned a golden retriever which we bred from twice and a black lab who we didn't manage to breed from. Now looking for a chocolate girl. Mainly interested in calm temperament and good health as we don't intend to work or show. She will be a much loved family pet. We are hoping to bring her home as soon as possible after a family holiday in March. Currently devouring books and scouring the Internet Do folk think it's ok to look on the pets for homes site as it's the only site I can see puppies being regularly advertised ? Thanks
I've looked at similar sites and my main concern would be whether the parents have the relevant eye test results, x-rays etc which a KC registered breeder for instance has to have done and has to keep them up to date. KC registered breeders are also limited as to how many litters a bitch can have and maximum age etc.. Champdogs looks a reasonable site but again ensure that the parents have the relevant health tests and that you can see the health papers. The results do have to be available for both parents for them to have any significance.
I wouldn't. I'd look around for breeders, and find the parents I liked. Search for Labrador breeders, the kennel club has a list of assured breeders, use the comments above to narrow down your search (eg reject any that don't list full health results or say they are available) and go from there....
