Just wondering what your pups energy levels are like?

Now it could be the heat but Rosie sleeps ALOT, mooches around alot but doesn't go crazy running about the house or garden. She's quite slow about the place. On walks she lollops around me but won't run off after a stick - preferring to stay close and mooch around me. She's inquisitive but just not quite as energetic and fizzy as I expected. For example, on our last walk (about a mile return) she lay down under a tree and refused to move. Now could be the heat as I said but wondered what others experiences were. Is she a lazy pup or a hotdog? She's just over four months now.

mine sleeps all night, during the day he dont sleep much, think he is to nosey , he don't want to miss any thing , its only me and him home alone,so he don't rush around, :) he will trot over to me lie down at every opportunity he gets for a tickle, :) after that he will push a toy under my nose for me to play a little tug game, then we will do our training for about 15 mins, ....i go up stairs to clean when i come down he is lay down , then routine again tickle /play /train :)

Up to about 3.5 months, Charlie had 2 speeds - fast asleep, or 200mph. Now, he has phases - energetic in the morning and late afternoon, not so at other times - sometimes, he can be awake and not chewing something, playing with something, or getting into trouble. But not often!

He has been much quieter in the heat. If he lies down on a walk, it is heat or he has done too much/we've stayed out too long (amounts to the same thing, I think).

I'm sure the heat would be a factor, but some dogs are also just happier to lie around and take it easy than others are. Not all pups are energy balls of puppy terror :) I wouldn't worry.

The mile return walk may have been too long for her, especially if it was warm. If they get too tired or just fed up with walking they can just sit or lie down and 'go on strike'. At 4 months she is still a baby :)

Jenny Ann,it's really hot where I live....all the time, normal life has to be built around that and after worrying Ive realized normal life for us is Dexter sleeping a lot.....I think they do when they are hot.i think as long as they are exercised enough and their diet is good there isn't anything to be concerned about.
Dexters routine has been the same since he arrived at 5 months except the morning has moved forward an hour and the excercise amount has increased. We come down to him at 5.30 am which most of the time means he has only had between 5.5 and 7.5 hours sleep.....he gets a good walk in the morning......slightly more than he should, round 45 minutes.....won't bore you with our morning details but the house probably settles down round 9.30 am by which time ,other than toilet breaks Dexter is housebound until 4 pm .he more or less settles down for the day in one place or another, snoozing, chewing, full on sleeping.he gets up and follows me everytime i move though .I used to really worry that he was bored, depressed with all this sitting around....but if anyone arrives he's up and interested and ready to engage......so we just leave him if he is asleep,he's seems content and I feel he is well exercised enough to peg out if he wants at other times in the day.theres bits of training through the day and at 4 pm we have a short play outside.he gets another short walk at 6pm which is practicing our nice walking and meeting people.Chris gives him another play in the garden when. He is in from work and he gets another walk at 9 pm ish ......to be perfectly honest having 4 months of abhorrentLy hot weather I'm actually counting my blessings that he isn't hyper.....and is happy to flop,it would be hard to occupy him if he was restless.
She is only still little,be led by her,is she's flopped, down she's probably had enough excercise.Ive read in a couple of places that dogs sleep between 10- 12 hours a day....ours is text book ;)

Charlie is around the same age as your pup Jannyann. She gets 20 - 30 mins a day walk. And she's messing aaround with the other dogs, mooching and wrestling for a lot of the day. Afternoons they'll all sleep for a few hours solid, then every night from 11pm until maybe 5.30am next morning.

When you said chase a stick, was it a real one, or a kong type version? There's info now about not encouraging them to chase sticks, due to mouth injuries if the stick catches on the ground when they're running, and has nowhere to go but backwards into their mouths.

I wouldn't worry about her energy levels in this heat. When things cool down a bit, and she's a little older, you'll see what's the 'norm' for her. And I'll put money on you wishing she was mopey again some days!

    Re: Energy levels

Thanks everyone, bit of variety in energy levels it seems. She seems happy enough with it - maybe she's just not going to be a high octane dog!

I don't really adhere to the rules for walking - we take her out for the day but because I'm with the kids we're not actually walking that far so she can (& does) fall asleep with us sitting on the grass at the park or on the beach or under a chair in a cafe. I like us to be outside and she just comes with us. She can easily out walk the little ones. It's not everyday & most days she gets 30 mins two times a day (on my three working days).

A lot of people would give their eye teeth for that kind of dog :)

I think it depends on the dog. Lady was a complete nightmare until she was nearly 3 when she suddenly kicked into grown up mode. Thank you lucky stars I say!
