Hi everyone. I've only just signed up so a bit slow getting to grips with the forum. I have a 17 week old golden lab pup named Brummie. Over the last 3-4 days I've noticed a lump growing on his abdoman and think it may be a hernia. I've googled till the cows come home and it's all contradictory. Has anyone experienced this and if so what am I up against? It doesn't seem to bother him at the moment but from what I've read they normally are born with this, his seems to have appeared now. Any experience and tales will be appreciated.

Hello and welcome from me too!
I think small umbilical hernias are not that uncommon in newborns but tend to go away without any intervention within a few weeks.
If it is something new (as you have said) and that is getting larger then the vet is essential.
I would think it would be good to keep an eye on it and make sure it isn't hot or red or tender, if he isn't happy you touching it then I would let the vet know urgently. I'm sure if it is a hernia it can be easily dealt with just as in humans.

Hi and welcome to the forum
My girl had pyometra just after she turns 1. During surgery they found she had a twisted hernia so sorted it out whilst she was under anaesthetic. The vet said she had probably had it for a long time, but she never showed any discomfort or pain at any time. We had even been to the vets several times over the months prior to pyometra and the vet never noticed either. There wasn't any visible signs either. The vets did say that it would of caused her discomfort and pain, but she obviously hid it well.
I would recommend you see the vet, especially as it is visible, and by the sounds of it, getting bigger. Good luck and please do let us know how you get on.

Welcome from Hattie 8 years and our rescue boy Charlie 5 years. When Hattie chose us from a litter of 11 puppies she had an umbilical hernia but the breeder was upfront about it also giving us a discount to cover the surgery. When we took her for her jabs etc. the vet checked it out confirmed that it was an UH and said she would be just fine until she was spayed. We kept a close eye on it and it was removed without any problems during her spay surgery.

I would advise getting it check out by your vet just to be sure. Helen xx
