Poor Poppy! Definitely sounds like something worse than a toenail to me - like I said, Willow wasn't particularly bothered when she pulled hers out, but isn't generally good with pain. She is a complete drama queen and came hobbling to me the other day on three legs, waving her fourth in the air in my general direction, because she had a tiny clump of ice between her toes... I actually love that she always comes up to me when something hurts. It's very sweet, even if it is just a touch pathetic... Would they do anything for a broken toe? I know it's nice to know for our own benefit, especially as it would extend the recovery time, but was wondering if there would be anything more than pain relief prescribed. I guess it depends on the severity.
Oh dear, poor Poppy I wonder if it may be an infection caused by the broken nail - worth an emergency vet phone call at least?
I think I would phone the emergency vet. Vomiting could be related to the metacam, or just the general stress poor Poppy is going through. Best to be safe
Charlie was always sick on metacam, stopped using it. If she is in pain, I'd try to get an alternative prescription of something....either another anti-inflammatory, or just a straight pain killer perhaps (eg tramadol, which isn't without its downsides).
Oh no, just catching up with this, poor poor Poppy that sounds awful. Ripped off toenails can be extremely painful if the sensitive corium is exposed and even little things like hairs touching it or tiny bits of gauze from a dressing touching it can cause marked pain. I would stop the Metacam immediately and get her to drink loads of fluids just in case the vomiting is the start of an adverse reaction to Metacam. Poor girl is going to be off games for a while I reckon.
Thanks everyone she seems calmer now, I've been giving her little drinks of water all evening and AT LAST she has done a pee (last one was yesterday evening). I've stopped the Metacam (thanks Julie and Lochan) and there's not been any more vomiting. She doesn't want to eat... I've got some Rimadyl and will start her on it tomorrow morning. And we are going back to see the vet first thing.
Oh no poor Poppy, I am sorry that sounds so painful Hope she starts to feel better really soon Karen. Lots of hugs from us xx0x0xx
Poor girl . She looks so sad When Harley ripped half her nail off and it got infected a few weeks ago she shut down when the vet bandaged her foot. My vet demonstrated how to do the bandage and suggested I changed it every other day to prevent putting Harley through the extra stress. As soon as I took the bandage off and re-bandaged it myself, she was back to normal! It did take about 13 days to healenough that bandages weren't needed.
That's a good point @Naya Who was it that had problems with this before? I don't think it was choccie Charlie though I know his harness had that kind of effect too
Dreadful night... Poor Pops had horrible diarrhea and was very distressed. This morning she seems much better, ate a little amount of food with quite a lot of water, and 100 mg of Rimadyl. Then back to the vet - the toe is not broken, and the vet is pleased with the wound - it is not infected and the toenail itself has started to re-grow; you can just see it at the beginning of the raw area. The paw has been re-bandaged much more loosely, and we are to go back on Saturday. So, hopefully now that we have got over the Metacam repercussions things will be looking up. Poor little Poppy, she is such a sweetheart it is really sad to see her in such a state. I have had to go into the office, but OH is home with her, and she is getting lots of cuddles and fuss. Thanks everyone for your concern and for the advice.
Good to hear that the toe isn't broken and that the nail has started re-growing. Hopefully she will soon pick up with the metacam out of her system. I'm sure all the extra cuddles and fuss will help her and she'll soon be back to her normal self.
Sorry for you having a rough night.....everything seems worse then doesn't it? Poor Mrs Pops,I'm glad the wound itself is looking ok and that after a quiet day she will be over the meds upset x
Good news! Hopefully things will start looking up, if the nail grows event a tiny bit more, and gives some protection, maybe it'll be less painful even if it takes a while to fully recover. Charlie reacts badly to metacam. I use Rimadyl now if I absolutely have to, but even that isn't great for him.
She's much brighter and happier this morning; bounced down the garden on three legs to do her business, ate a hearty breakfast, and even presented me with her lambie, so things must be looking up! Once she is up on her feet and has walked on three legs for a few minutes she starts gingerly putting weight on her front paw as well. I am very hopeful that things will continue to improve from now on.
