Does anybody have a fool proof recipe for their pet's Kong toy? I need something that takes some time and determination for Zoe to finish. I had started putting a bit of peanut butter in the Kong and freezing it but it doesn't seem to last long. I am not sure if the peanut butter by nature does not freeze very solid or what the deal is. If anyone has a recipe that works for them and is willing to share it, I would appreciate. Thanks!
Re: Kong Stuffing There was a great recipe on not so long ago from cuffberto I think,it involved the sandwich paste jars you can buy....I'm nipping out soon but will have a look for you when I'm back on later
Re: Kong Stuffing I'm still on my kong stuffing journey (I'm sure others will have more and better tips). Because I need so many stuffed kongs, and Charlie is a podge, I have to try to keep the food volume down. Charlie hates peanut butter! I don't use commercial stocks, and try to stay away from shop bought food pastes, having seen the salt and chemical content of them. I tend to use smaller, rather than larger kongs - this keeps the food volume down, and it's better using the smaller kongs rather than putting less in a bigger kong. The thing that freezes hardest for me, is loose kibble with water poured in - this creates a very hard, difficult kong. I uses the largest puppy kong for this. Charlie is really slow with these, and licks it until it starts to melt a bit. A single tinned sardine squished in the bottom, then kibble and water makes it much more interesting for him. A single strip of dried liver in the bottom, under the stuffing, also helps make more boring fillers more interesting. A tinned mackrel, chopped up small, and sort of dissolved in water, then poured in and frozen is pretty good value, and can fill a large puppy kong well. A hard square biscuit in the bottom, that I struggle to get in, with chicken breast squished round it until it's packed - this works well in the smallest puppy sized kong that I have, but needs too much chicken in the larger sizes - frozen or not frozen. A very small puppy kong, with a single quail's egg is a great emergency kong for me - it's quite hard for him to get the egg out of it.
Re: Kong Stuffing Hi Julie, doesn't like Peanut butter, wow my Charlie devoures it ;D I sometimes do a frozen mashed banana kong, goes down well here with my two. You could add kibble or a bit of natural yoghurt I suppose. Helen x
Re: Kong Stuffing Our staple is banana frozen. Can just squish as much as the kong will take and doesn't run out the bottom. Sometimes mix in peanut butter (lilly likes it) or honey or natural yoghurt. Sometimes all three ;D We always have over ripe bananas in the house. If you don't have time to freeze, thsn I have found carrot battons firmly squashed in a good optio. Once though there were so many so tightly packed the kong was still full when I got home - still, kept her occupied ;D. Felt a bit guilty though Jac
Re: Kong Stuffing Banana is a good tip, thanks - and also just found out Charlie loves blackberries (he hoovered up what was on the floor in the veg garden then started helping himself to the bush!) so I could mix some of those in too.
Re: Kong Stuffing What brilliant ideas, does the frozen food burn their tongues? At mo filling our puppy kong with biscuits but it is adding to the daily food ration, we grow small tomatoes, dropped one this morning Chloe got there first and ate it, I hope tomatoes are all right for them, no runs etc, yet!!! Then she discovered that they grow in the greenhouse, she was wondering how to pick them, ;D Now we have to put a garden chair in the doorway, or it would not be long for her to fathom out how to pick one or more, none of our dogs have eaten tomatoes, oh and she tried to take a piece of orange off me, weird tastes she has!!! We had to laugh tonight, I was eating crisps, she was having her tea (Burns complete) she arrived, having left her tea in her bowl, enjoyed one or two crisps, then returned to her tea, she definitely prefers crisps!!! Cheers, Val
Re: Kong Stuffing Don't know about toms - I hate them, so don't buy or eat them so Charlie doesn't get them either. Charlie is fine with frozen kongs - and ice cubes. No sign of tongue burn! He shuffles his frozen kongs around a bit until they start to warm up. Good, last a bit longer. Charlie is a champ chewer. God bless the inventor of kongs!
Re: Kong Stuffing Thanks everyone! The Kongs really are a life saver when we need to occupy Zoe in a pinch. We are currently going with a two Kong rotation so that one is always in the freezer. Kibble and peanut butter in one, and now the suggested banana in the other. The Kongs we use are a bit on the smaller side as someone mentioned in order to minimize the amount of extra food she is getting. The trick to getting the peanut butter to freeze a little better was as simple as mixing in a bit of water with the peanut butter and kibble. The banana seems to freeze fairly solid on it's own.
Re: Kong Stuffing chloe has stopped barking at mealtime, great, ignored her, it worked, thanks to all. Family came last weekend, live far away, so do not come often, she went potty, then had a super time. I got a filled bone from pet shop for a change from Kong, 99p, (real bone) gave her this whilst we all had dinner just in case she had other ideas!! It lasts a lot longer than the Kong. Then when filling gone, have to help with the residue she cannot reach, boil it and she enjoys it empty, pet shop said it is filled with chicken!!? Did not affect the digestion though, so that was good. Might help somebody, they are on web but cost a bit more than our pet shop, they are very popular and get sold out quickly. Val
Re: Kong Stuffing Hi Val - Lilly gives up quickly on the filled bones - she can't get it out without a bit of help, at least once she has got the ends Once they are cleaned though, we have filled them up too with food (banana is always our favourite) and frozen them too instead of the kongs/hedgehogs. Give you high traffic kong users another option I guess ;D
