Poppy has just come into season, I wanted her spayed but my vet would not do her until after her first season, It is very unfortunate as we have booked to go away this weekend, taking Poppy with us staying with two other dogs both female so that's not the problem, we were aiming to go on lots of doggy walks with all three do you think that's impossible now due to male dogs that might be around? plus the blood that she loses although on the second day its not much, but at someone elses house might be not so pleasant, am I over thinking and should just go and have fun or am I right to be cautious, the other two dogs are always running free and not on the lead, will it be too risky to let Poppy off away from home, we have got a spray to hide her smell, will this be enough..thanks for listening.

Hi Lois, it will definitely be too risky to let her off the lead, I am afraid - especially in an area that you don't know well, and where you don't know what male dogs are around... And the spray will NOT hide her smell from male dogs! Sorry, but you do need to be careful.

Yes! I'm afraid so Lois! The spray is a waste both of time and money... ;)

Check out the exact timing of a season to see when she will be at her most fertile. You might get away with a weekend away, but honestly you'd have to keep her on the lead, and depending on how many entire dogs are around, you might find your nice quiet weekend getaway disturbed by a lot of howling!

If it were me I would postpone the weekend. As you say, there will be other times, when you and your Poppy can both have a much more relaxing break!

My Poppy says hello too! ;D

Hi Lois,I've just seen your post ......you need to be really, really careful with her ......and definitely keep her on the lead..Ive got an entire 10 month male and while he has his moments he is generally a very good dog .....he literally dragged me on my knees about 10 m to get to a beagle in season ,I could not hold against his strength and believe me I was trying ......so dogs would pester the life out of your Poppy.leave your weekend for another time when you can really enjoy yourself and there can't be any unfortunate accidents, that would be awful for you both.
Luckily Dexter didnt sow any wild oats..... :D

Hi Another question...Poppy has been bleeding for a week now does this last about 3 weeks? and once bleeding has stopped is she safe to go off lead again? Apparently I know have to wait another 3 months before getting her spayed...but how long before we can be normal again?

    Re: First Season

Hi again - the bleeding will change colour to almost colourless, and may stop - but this is the most dangerous time, when she will be at her most receptive! The vulva will be very swollen, and if you rub above her tail she may 'flag' her tail to one side, showing she is ready to mate. You will definitely need to keep her on the lead during this time, and to be certain it will be best to keep her on the lead and keep away from other dogs (unless you know they are bitches or castrated males) for the entire three weeks. Then things will soon be back to normal.

Don't worry, it'll be over soon. Has she been showing any mood swings or clingy behaviour? It's not uncommon... :)

    Re: First Season

Hi Lois, I have never been through a season with Lilly as she was spayed at 6 months, but I hear that girl dogs are pretty "tarty" and need no invitation to present their rear end to an interested male dog, quick as a flash!
Not quite the picture of a rambunctious boy and demure girl that I thought before I became more aware of all these doggy problems
    Good luck with your girl!

To be completely sure , I would count four full weeks from when you first think she came into season .

Yes, the received wisdom is 21 days, but better to err on the side of caution.
