My 12year old Labrador has suddenly started eating soil. She is very well fed on fish and chicken and looks and acts healthy. Should I be worried? Has anyone else had this problem? Any advise is welcome. Thank you
Hello there, and a very warm welcome! As it's a change, your dog hasn't had this habit before but has just suddenly started it, I'd take her to the vet. She might be trying to soothe a gastrointestinal problem. After that, if there is nothing physically wrong, I'd look at her routine and behaviour - does she have enough to do? Is anything stressing her? And so on. Best of luck with it.
Hello and welcome! As I understand it, this can be a sign that she's missing some minerals from her diet. At any rate, I'd have a chat with your vet.
My German Pointer and a friend's Flatcoat Retriever both ate soil, but had been doing so for some years. If it is a new thing to your dog, best to have a word with the vet.
Ripple eats soil, but then he eats all manner of disgusting things and this is probably the least of it although I don't like him eating soil. It's actually got worse since the ground has been frozen as he seems to like chomping on mud ice lollies . He's never allowed outside on his own so he's only doing it on trips down the garden for a wee etc, during training sessions, and when we're out for a walk. He's on Millie's Wolfheart but I did wonder if he was missing any minerals, I have discussed it with the trainers at his school and they don't seem to think it's likely, maybe it would be worth me mentioning it to the vet.
Thanks everyone for their advise. I will check with the vet on Monday. Don't worry she will be looked after. Thanks again Angy
