Hi all I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a new situation we find ourselves in. Our nearly 15 week old puppy has been doing really well generally. His nights have been going well, he sleeps well. He is in bed asleep Around 9.30pm. I let him out to toilet at 2am and then my partner gets up at 430am and let ms him out then again to toilet. The past 2 weeks we haven't had any accidents over night. He has been peeing on the grass in the garden as planned. As of today Hugo has been peeing in places he normally wouldn't. He has peed in his outside crate which the door was open he walked in while I was out watching him and peed in there. I ignored this. Then he peed again on his other bedding outside while o watched him. Then tonight he comes inside to sit on his bed while we watch tv in the living room (we do this routine every night) he peed on his bedding inside. This behaviour is very different to normal. He seems fine in all other ways. I'm worried we have been doing something wrong! It just seems strange for all the progress to go out the window! We were going so well. Any advice would be appreciated.
When he's been having the accidents inside how have you been cleaning them up? There could be a residual smell from an earlier accident that is making him think it's ok to go to the toilet there. I can highly recommend 'simple solutions' for cleaning up accidents, it's fab! Gets rid of any urine smell left behind. Whatever you do don't use anything with bleach or ammonia in as this mimics the smell of dog urine. I was also advised to use biological washing powder however I found that this stained my carpet which is why I switched to the simple solutions. It might be worth going back to the very beginning for a few days, perhaps he just needs a reminder of what he's supposed to be doing? Go back to letting him out after eating, sleeping and playing, and every half an hour in between. He should pick it up again fairly quickly. In my experience once we think they've 'got it' we tend to relax a bit on the housetraining and this is when accidents begin to happen again. As long as you're sure there's no medical reason (eg urine infection) why he's messing inside it's probably just a lapse in his training and a few days or a week of back to basics should sort it out.
I agree with what Lauren has said above. Thorough cleaning with neutralising solution and going back to basics. Also consider taking a urine sample to the vet if this isn't working.
Good advice from Lauren. It's not uncommon to have a little relapse before you get toilet training well and truly sorted. If it continues it may be worth checking with the vet for an infection
If that's a sudden and sustained change a UTI could be the culprit. I'd ask my Vet and see if they wanted a urine sample.
