They are so difficult to spot on Hattie because of her long coat even with rigerous checking, but they tend to attach on her eyelids, horrible, horrible but at least I can see them and quickly remove. I've found a tick attached to me -- probably two or three times in the last four years. The last time I found one, I felt rather squeamish knowing it had probably been there for an entire day cos we'd left the tick area in the morning and I only noticed later in the evening -- attached to the front of my thigh (under shorts). Thankfully nothing untoward happened to me. I know a few people who've had tick bite fever -- they said it felt like the worst flu possible, but all of them are absolutely fine now. When we were in that tick area I sprayed below my knees/feet with the most vile smelling neem oil and lemongrass spray, says "Anti Tick" on the bottle, used it cos it also said "non toxic". Also sprayed Snowie's tummy and legs -- didn't want to spray him entirely cos the smell was so vile I was worried it would stress him (re being epileptic). It kept the mosquitoes away from me! My husband didn't use it and he got bitten by mosquitoes, no ticks though. I must say that I find it very worrying that all these anti-tick/flea products warn to keep away from humans. What are they doing to our animals?
Like @Karen , I also worry a little about prolonged use of Bravecto , but I haven't come across another productive that is as effective , so its a case of striking a balance I guess . Being mild in Cornwall , the little perishers thrive all winter , the dogs have had a tablet this morning , I shall try to hang on for several months if I can .
Meant to say i was reading about ticks and natural remedies to repel ticks last night (though i cannot remember where ) One of them was a mixture of vinegar and water, you just spray a fine mist around your dog. Seemingly they hate vinegar. Wish i could remember where i read it. I tried googling it and all I found was a suggestion of putting a t shirt over your dog and make leg warmers out of socks Baxter would be mortified!
