Kennel Cough

I`ve just heard that one of the dogs who was at the family fun day last Sunday has developed Kennel Cough As both Sam and Millie met so many of the dogs , mingling with them all , I shall impose a quarantine period on both of them until I am sure that the incubation period has passed and keep my fingers firmly crossed in the meantime

Oh boy. Do you vaccinate for that? Bordetella? Most people I know don't as it's so unreliable as to which strain you'll get that year. A couple of Vet visits ago there were two dogs in with horrible coughs and both had been vaccinated. One of the owners wanted to pet Oban and I wouldn't let him. Oban is not vaccinated for it.

 

Both dogs had the spray up the nose about a year ago , but as you rightly say, its a lottery with regards to the strain doing the rounds . I think its just a sensible precaution to keep them away from other dogs until I know they are both safe.

 

Fingers crossed that they both stay fit and healthy for you Kate. Very sensible to have a period of isolation until the incubation period has passed if only all dog owners were as thoughtful

 

Oban had that when he was very young and it put him off the Vet who did it forever. My new Vet says that's common and now there is an oral version most dogs tolerate taking much better.

For some strange reason we did not HAVE to have the vaccination in any form for any of our classes but one and not for any trials we were in.

 

Oh no, crossed fingers and paws that they haven't picked it up.

 

Everything crossed they don't catch it.

Kate, well done for being such a responsible owner! So many around here carry on walking in the busiest dog spots knowing full well their dog has got or could be incubating KC, they have no regard for owners with already sick, elderly or very young dogs.

 

Thanks all , yes there was a lady in our village who never restricted her dog at all when it had KC . I guess its 50/50 for Sam and Millie , I worry more about the prospect of Millie coming down with it because she is an older dog and more vulnerable with her health issues , but isolated they must be

Just been trying to look up the incubation period for KC. It seems that if it's a Bordatella strain it will normal show symptoms in around a week., for a virus 2 - 14 days so fingers crossed for you.

 

Thanks Rosemary , it was last Sunday that they possible came into contact with this dog , I`ll try and find out what type of strain it is, and if I cant then I will keep them both isolated for another week or so yet .

Just been in touch with the person I know at the rescue , who told me about the case of KC . He doesn't know which type it is, but he is pretty sure that the dog who has it , is a member of the flyball team who were at the show . This eases my mind a little as we kept well away from the flyball area , due to Millies love of tennis balls

 

Fingers crossed that you didn't come close to the affected dog, although the other dogs in the fly ball team are at risk as it's so contagious.
