Hi all, Effie had her second vaccinations and her microchip today. We gave her her worming treatment today at 1pm. My other half noticed after her 1pm meal that her belly was particularly distended but assumed it was just post-meal. She has been unusually sleepy all afternoon, no biting, no playing. Going to the toilet normally. I noticed her belly as well this afternoon. Her belly feels v distended and firm. Not rock hard and she doesn't seem in pain when we have a good feel. Just a bit worried as she seems excessively sleepy and unsure if her swollen tum is normal. She last ate 2.5 hours ago. Does this sound normal?
Hi Louise, sometimes wormers can upset tums, but if your pup doesn't seem well, even though her tummy seems soft, it might be best running it past your vet. They can become unwell pretty quickly when they are so small, just like human babies.
I think it might have been a mistake doing the vaccination, microchip and worming tablet on one day, especially with a young pup. I've had the same kind of reaction before and now always leave several days between vaccinations and worming. I'm sure she'll be better in a day or so, but my advice is to remember that for next time. Same thing applies for tick and flea treatment - leave a few days before worming or vaccinations.
I'm like Karen and never do wormer, flea/tick treatment or vaccinations close together. I try to leave a few days between as a minimum.
Does your pup sleep near you at night? It might be an idea to sleep near her tonight, my pup had a major poop explosion during the night when he was young after having a wormer, he made hardly any noise only a very quiet whimper. How it woke me, I'll never know it was like a sixth sense feeling that woke me but the mess was everywhere. It was as if he didn't have chance to be warned that he needed to go, so no time to bark just an upset tiny whimper after it happened. I was so sorry for him, he'd never messed his bed before and was obviously distressed by doing so this night, luckily I was able to dump everything in a huge bag and clean up, then settle him back in his other bed with me by him on the sofa. For months after, every time he had a wormer, I slept by him just in case.
I always give Juno her wormer with breakfast so it has a long time to work before bedtime after one session of runny poo when she was little.
I also give dewormer with breakfast in case of diarrhea. I was asking my vet about our adult boy's deworming schedule. We'd given him Bravecto one month earlier and she said to wait a couple MONTHS before giving him a dewormer, too many chemicals all at once.
Funnily enough she perked up around 11pm last night...that was fun... Effie is still sleeping in her crate in our room. I woke up a couple of times to check on her and both times she was out for the count! Thankfully all well this morning. Will definitely take everyone's advice on board for her next wormer to be safe though. Thanks everyone
