Hi all! I tried to look up how much I should expect our Hampton to weigh as an adult and it lead me here so I signed up! This is a very long thread so I was hoping someone could help me. Hampton is 14 weeks old and weighs just over 28lbs.(We live in Iowa). Any answers or suggestions would be appreciated... Look forward to visiting here often as we grow with Hammy: )
Hello and WELCOME to the forum! I discovered this two years ago soon after my boy Pongo arrived, and it has been a life-saver for me as well as a constant source of laughs - hope you find it as great a place as I do. I started this thread because there seemed to be so much variation in our pups' weights and it intrigued me. Pongo is huge compared to most. But the range is very wide, and there is definitely not a "right" answer. I was keeping a graph updated to show the range - I'm afraid I've not added to it for ages (MUST get round to doing that!) but you'll see what I mean. I think that 28lbs is 12.7 kg, so Hampton is towards the top of the range but still not as big as Pongo was at 14 weeks (he was about 30lbs). https://www.dropbox.com/s/lohrbykusgiezz6/dog weights 7 feb 15.JPG?dl=0 More important than weight is shape. I was told that you should be able to see you dog's waist from the side and above; and you should not be able to see his ribs, but you should be able to feel them as though they are under a blanket (not a sheet and not a duvet). Hope that helps! Looking forward to hearing all about Hammy's adventures. (We love photos, by the way.....)
Ah, just seen you've tried to share a photo with us.... I don't think it worked. You need to use a photo-sharing site...someone will be along soon who can give you advice, I'm rubbish at the techy stuff...
Hello, and a very warm welcome. Try not to be too influenced by expected adult size (I know the feeding guidelines are sometimes based on this but I think that's about really big differences eg whether you are feeding a Labrador or a Mastiff etc). It's much more important that your puppy is well fed but stays slim at all times. I'm afraid I've definitely noticed a link on the forum between people expecting puppies to be 'big' and the same people having overweight puppies, so I think this is an important point. Not that I know anything about your puppy, of course, he might be super slim for all I know! Just a point to remember for the future.
He is in very good shape. Very athletic build with a very blocky head a huge mits. Thanks for replies and I'll work on the pics.
Ok so reading all the comments I do believe my Charlie is over weight currently weighing 30.75kg he is 8months old
Wow, Charlie is a big boy! Is he tall, too? Do you have any recent pictures of him side-on and from above? You should be able to see a pronounced tuck-in at the waist from above and a tuck-up from the side. You should be able to feel his ribs easily when you stroke your hand down his side - as if they're covered by a blanket, not a sheet and not a duvet. Welcome to the forum, we'd love to see more pictures of him. Pop over to the Introductions section and say hi
Not necessarily..... my boy Pongo was 32 kg at 8 months. He is a very big boy! Do the "feel his ribs" test that snowbunny describes (above), and look for his waist. If you can take some photos for us, we'd all be delighted to give an opinion!!
oK think we may have found Pongo a new girlfriend....Bramble our young ladette...at 4.5months weighs 17.1kg!!! Not quite the petite little lady We were hoping for!
Honestly, Charlie has a working line girlfriend that is the size of a donkey. She is adorable, fit and impressive. But donkey size.... Edited to remove the word 'small' in front of donkey!
Took my boys to be weighed at the vets last week - they walked in, queue'd politely at the scales, took turns to sit quietly on them whilst being weighed and regrettably there was NOT ONE soul in the waiting room to witness this. If they had played me up there would have been a cast of thousands present!
Hi MaccieD, Riley is 9.5 Months old now and weighs 25kg the same as she was 2 months ago and looks really good now. I noticed that she was looking a bit podgy after your advice about the ribs and the sheet or blanket test. So I have reduced the amount of kibble she has been getting over that time and she she is doing really good. Thanks for the advice.
Hi @BigDutch that is so good to hear , and really pleased that you have found the 'test useful. I keep a check on Juno's weight by popping into the vet once a month to pop her on the scales but I use the waist, tuck up and rib feel as my guide; the scales just confirm my assessment. Riley is looking really good in your avatar
I really love this thread, it really demonstrates the variations, and how things can even change over time. I've just joined the forum, and my male Labrador Bear just truned 8 weeks old, he weighed in at 7.4kg. At the moment he is all paws and head. Cheers, Cameron
Just back from the vets. Willow is now 22.75kg and Shadow is 22.35kg. Shadow has lost a bit of weight recently - I don't think I increased his food by enough when we were in Spain and his exercise level was much higher. I tried giving more, but he got the squits as he tends to when he's over-fed. So, back to slooooow increases to get him back in condition.
