Nugget is 15 weeks. At night, he sleeps in his crate, which is in a pen. He gets out of the crate at night to pee and sometimes to poo. I take him out for his last pee and poo at around 11.30, sometimes a little later. We are all up at 7. I understand that he cannot hold his pee this long but I wanted to check that it's typical for puppies to still be pooping in the night at this age? It's not a problem and I know that I could shut him in his crate and he wouldn't do either, but that would mean getting up in the night which I don't want to do. I'm really just posting to see when puppies typically stop pooping at night
Oban did too. Jet never needed out at night, ever, from day one at 7 weeks old. Oban needed out twice a night, pee and poop, then once a night, pee and poop, till about 4.5 months old. Gradually his one time out at night got later and later till it was morning of the next day. We could hear him fussing down in the kitchen and just got up when we heard him. Whether this was typical I don't know but for Oban, it was his normal.
If the poos are firm he should be able to hold on - but if they are looser then he won't be able to. Pro-fibre helps to firm up the poos and is good bacteria for their tums - http://tinyurl.com/jxoulla I don't feed after 7:30pm - this helps too. .
Thanks so much. I don't feed after 7.30 and poos are firm... so I guess he's like Oban Hopefully he'll just grow out of it soon.
At 15 weeks your Nugget -- great name -- should be fine holding his urine. If a pup poops at night he's probably getting to much kibble.
Oh dear, really? It's hard to know how much to give. I'm already giving a little less than the amount recommended on the packaging. I was actually thinking he looked a little too lean and was planning on INCREASING his kibble allowance! Now I'm not sure what to do
Looking on the bright side you do have evidence that he is not eating it. When Will was a pup I would just find the last remains of what clearly had been a much larger deposit - usually just after he'd kissed my face. I too love his name.
The first sign that they are getting too much is loose poos (ie not 'kickable') But the packets almost always say far, far too much anyway. .
Hugo (14 weeks old) poops most nights ! His crate is dry and he lasts eat pretty early 5-530 and is on raw food. He goes out around 10-1030 and sometimes poops then but not always but most mornings there is one on the paper (firm). I have never got up with him but here him walking around onto the paper most nights around 3am?
I wouldn't worry about the night time poop, I found it's something they grow out if as they get older and have more control, just like peeing. To my mind it's far better that they cry to alert you to their need or use paper/pads provided.
I'm having this issue at the moment. Milo is 12 weeks and in the last week has taken to pooing in the night. He sleeps with maisie (18 months) in a pen, and Milo has never weed or pooed in there, but he has now discovered he can run and jump and climb out, and so now every morning I come down and he is out of the pen and he has pooed at least once, sometimes twice by the back door. We last feed at 6pm, and we always ensure he poos before we go to bed but he is still pooing. don't know where its coming from! Its mostly a decent consistency so its not like he has an upset tummy. its so annoying! he is my 3rd puppy in 3 years and Iv never had an issue with overnight toileting!
