Anyone train their pup to ring a bell to go outside?

Nugget is usually clean in the house during the day - however, we had an accident a couple of days ago where he was left downstairs alone for a few minutes and couldn't 'ask' to go out (his 'asking' is to stand by the door and look at me a certain way). I spend half my life in the kitchen so it usually works fine lol, but on this occasion I wasn't there so he peed on the floor.

I have bought a nice set of jingly bells so he can let me know when he wants to go out - now I need to teach him to use them. I have read a few different ways of doing this and I'm not sure which will be the most effective - I'm a bit worried he is going to rip the bells off the door and try to eat them!

Has anyone done this? Do you have a step by step approach I should use to get him to use them? Thank you

 

I haven't trained the use of bells as a signal to go out, Juno uses the same as Nugget and gives me 'a certain look'. I seem to recall that @Boogie used bells training I think it was Gypsy, her first GD puppy. I'll have a look to see if I can find a link, or hopefully will be able to advise direct

 

Have not tried the bells because my worry is they'll be ringing all day long, whenever he wants to check out something in the back yard. And, I'm sure the cats would play with them. Probably on purpose, little devils.

Thanks everyone. I have 2 cats too, and it only just occurred to me that bells hanging from the door are going to make a great toy.

Well, I'll give it a try and see what happens!

I trained our rescue dog Charlie to use bells at the age of 9 months, he is 5 years old now and he still uses them. He had no idea how to let us know he wanted to go outside when we rescued him so I bought some Christmas decorations with bells on, cut them off and strung them onto a piece of ribbon, hung one set on the inside and the other on the outside. Worked a treat x

 

Hugo is 18 weeks and pretty much house trained but only if I spot the "look" he doesn't bark or wimpering he wants to go out so occasionally there is an accident by the door - I have bells buy to be honest he just ran off with them !

 

Well this seems doomed to failure lol but I will try it and report back!

 

It's a good idea though, would save the constant paw prints on my patio door! Molly usually scratches to go out. Yesterday she had 2 accidents which is really unusual, I don't think she likes going out in the rain. She managed to wee on the stairs, how is that even possible?! She's not supposed to be on the stairs so maybe the excitement was just to much!
