Murphy has a bit of Colitis.he seems ok in himself but we think it's developed over like 2 weeks with him starting off being off his food and culminated in him having an upset stomach, so the vet thinks he has colitis. Before this all started he was sleeping for 7 hours overnight but in the last week especially he has started waking up and barking in the night about 3 times a night. I started off letting him out to go to the loo which he always did but iv started just standing by his crate and not letting him out every time because I know he's not desperate! The thing is, do you think he has started waking up in the night because he is a bit poorly and what should I do about it because in Pippas article about night waking she says about punishing them with water and saying no but is he still too young for that (13 weeks). Also in the last couple of days he seems to have completely forgotten about his toilet training and has had loads of accidents whereas he had gone three days without accidents inside before. Could this be down to him being a bit poorly? Any suggestions about the night waking and barking? He's got really bark happy! Thanks in advance everyone Frankie x
Re: Poorly puppy I'm no vet Frankie, but wonder if he is getting tummy pains? Imagine ourselves if we had a mild food-poisoning or tummy bug, we would get a crampy tummy and be a bit loose, as well as maybe not sleep so well - I would wonder if its the same for dogs? Maybe you need to run it past your vet though, just to make sure this is as expected, or if he needs to reconsider his treatment? Hope the wee soul is ok x
Re: Poorly puppy Thanks Jaqui, I didn't think to mention his night waking with the vet when I saw her yesterday but that makes sense with not sleeping well and possible stomach cramps- it didn't help when she saw him that he was really overexcited because of some dogs in the waiting room so he didn't seem ill at all! Re: Poorly puppy Poor boy, how worrying for you. Do you think he needs to go out more because his tummy is upset? If he has been going when you let him out, and his toilet training is all shot, could it be that he does need to go in the night - at least until he is well? Charlie's recent bout of runny poo had me up and down like a yo-yo taking him out 6 times a day to poo, which is completely unusual for him - he has been a 2 poops a day pup for the last 2 months. We're back to normal now.
Re: Poorly puppy Sorry to hear about Murphy , colitis can be very painful indeed in humans and so I would think the same for dogs/pups , so yes, tummy cramps are the likely culprit for his disturbance of sleep , has your Vet told you to change his diet at all ? Hoping he is loads better soon x
Re: Poorly puppy Actually when I said he's having accidents inside I mean wee not poo luckily. I didn't explain that very well, which is just why I wasn't sure if it was linked. Luckily he's never had a pooing accident inside, even now with a bad tummy he's been good to go outside. It's the sudden forgetfulness about weeing that is rather annoying and I wondered whether its because of his being ill or something. Il give him the benefit of the doubt for his night waking and not ignore him or punish him. And see how it goes. Thanks for your good wishes everyone Frankie x
Re: Poorly puppy Hmm...if this was a human child I would be checking a urine sample to rule out a urine infection. Do the wee accidents smell strong or different? I would still mention it to the vet. jac
Re: Poorly puppy Frankie, I agree with Jac, my daughter has a kidney infection and has been peeing for Great Britain and is on antibiotics, it is quite painful, infact she is being sent to the hospital for a kidney ultrasound definitely worth a mention. Helen x
