I've not been around much recently, but I had thought "I wonder if Julie is going to get a new puppy". Great News. Obviously I think a yellow girl is exactly the right choice You'll be able to Moderate worldwide when you are doing those trips to the garden in the wee small hours

New Pup will have a human sleeping downstairs with her for the first couple of nights, but....puppies in my house are in a pen arrangement with newspapers overnight. OH stays up 'till midnight, and I get up at 5am. The whole nighttime thing is a gold standard too far for me.
I never got up at a specific time! Pup would wake me and I would take them out and gradually the time they were alseep became longer and longer. I think with my last one, he slept through until we got up at 8am, within about three weeks! He was the exception! I can remember many a 6am with the others, sitting in the garden in my nightie
Well, I don't know what this pup will be like..... But we lived in the pen (which was a small room off the kitchen) with Charlie for the first couple of days - I had a comfy chair in there etc. I think he just thought it was home, then he slept there. He never cried, had a wee on newspapers if he really needed to, and I didn't get up, and I didn't spend any time whatsoever in the garden in my nightie! Kinda hoping the same routine might work again. Just relocated Charlie to the kitchen (he doesn't mind) so the puppy room is free.
We were really lucky, Dexter slept through the night from 11pm to 5am with no accidents from night 3. OH is up at 5am for work. We were just very fortunate.
Me too! For each pup I have a puppy bed by my bed in case they cry at night (I give them 15/20 minutes to settle). So far I haven't needed it, but it's there for the first few nights just in case. I have a pen with puppy pads, when they start on pad shredding (usually a week later) I just have the lino and wipe it up if there's a puddle in the morning, hubby goes to bed late and I get up early. It works, no lack of sleep as the pup doesn't shout when she needs the loo ~ as soon as their bladder matures they don't 'go' in the night anyway.
I do think this makes for a quiet dog - Charlie is silent in his pen (or a crate). I think because you don't dither around deciding whether or not to go to them in case they need the loo. You just wait for quiet.

Yes, none of mine have shouted to us for attention. But, be warned, both pups (and Rossi) shouted at Tatze to play, especially when she'd had enough! A lot!! I'm working out ways to prevent this with the new pup, it was quite annoying for Tatze ~ and us! ...
I was planning to implement your 'don't bother the older dog when he is on his chair" thing that you do. I suspect Charlie will be similar to Tatze, he'll be happy to play but not forever.
I am a meanie, I didn't let mine play. The thought of two Labs thrashing around the house was not appealing! In fact they don't play with any dogs, too many injuries can occur. They like each other, they go out together and sometimes the older one will chase the younger one, but not very often.
That also might be the case with Charlie, I'll have to see - I might be back asking for advice about getting the older dog to stop bothering the puppy!
If they get over the top I say half time and they have a rest. One goes under the table and the other in the shack
Yes, the chair thing really works and Twiglet and Gyspy very quickly learned to leave Tatze alone when she was on there ~ she dives for it when she's had enough. The barking happens when she's not playing (enough according to the pup) but she's not on the chair. We have never told her to go on the chair, it was always her choice. But, maybe with the next pup a solution will be - when the pup starts to shout at her to get Tatze to go on her chair. Now that she's older she won't have any problem with that. The pup will hopefully learn then that barking at her doesn't work, I think with the other two that the barking sometimes worked and sometimes didn't ..
