My eleven and a half week old puppy has a broken canine tooth and the vet has told me that at twelve weeks he will have to see the dentist to possibly have it removed.I am concerned about this and wonder if anyone has had this same experience. I was hoping that the tooth might have fallen out but as yet its not even wobbly.
Hello there, and a warm welcome. Yes, it is definitely the case that a broken puppy tooth needs to be looked at and probably removed. It's not the case that they don't matter because they fall out anyway, they might be painful, get infected etc and cause problems for the teeth yet to come. I agree. Great to hear that your vet has referred you on to a doggy dentist. You have a good vet. The good thing is that it's just a baby tooth, so he will eventually get a brand new, perfect adult tooth. Let us know what the verdict is from the dentist.
Bramble when she was around 11 weeks old broke a baby canine. We had this monitored by the vet, who decided on a "wait and see" approach. It was fine, and now at almost 6 months her new adult canines are beautiful!
I have just seen the dentist about Alfies tooth and he says that its important to remove it so that is happening right now! I am picking him up in one hour and its been a horrible morning waiting get him. For the next ten days he has to have soft food [which no doubt will mean diarrhoea] The dentist said that I could get tinned food but I'm thinking that I might be better off softening his usual food with water as I know that his breeder was doing that before she gave him it dried. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks for all this help,such a wonderful site!
He will be ok, though I'm sure it's pretty stressful for his human! He'll grow a lovely new tooth with no complications. He might be a bit groggy for a little bit afterwards so don't worry if he is. I'd definitely go with what the vet recommends and give tinned food. That will make eating as easy as possible.
Hello and well done for taking this so seriously! I am sure Alfie will be fine, but the first few days may be a little up and down, both for you and him! If it's any consolation, I had a very old dog (15 years old) who had to have several teeth removed. For a couple of days he was a bit under the weather, but recovered fast and was eating again almost immediately. Let us know how Alfie gets on!
Ah it's horrible leaving them at the vet but it's great you took him so soon.I hope he is ok over the next couple of days x
