Winnie is doing really well in all areas, it's just at night she can struggle. She goes to bed in her crate and there is very little fuss or noise. If she wakes in the night we take her out and then the noise starts. We don't interact and place her back in her crate. Last night she just kept on barking and howling, it hasn't been that bad before but we usually get some noise after a toilet trip in the night. Any top tips, we are trying to ignore. Is this a phase? Thanks!
How old is Winnie now? I can't remember off hand and it's a pain to search when I'm using my phone. Is her crate near to you? Would you consider having her crate in your bedroom until she sleeps through as it may help her to settle.
@MaccieD Winnie is 13 weeks and only been with us for 2 weeks so I appreciate it's still early days! We just don't want to reinforce this type of behaviour at all. She sleeps downstairs in the dining room (in her crate), Maddie my old lab is also downstairs but moves between the dining room and lounge. Any advice welcome!
Hi @Branston1080 at 13 weeks is very much a baby still, especially as she has only been with you for 2 weeks. I think I would just bring her crate into the bedroom for a week or so until she no longer needs a toilet break during the night. It could be that she feels a little scared and lonely and just needs the little extra reassurance. I had my girl in the bedroom in her crate for the first few weeks as it broke my heart to hear her cry, but two weeks later when she was just about going through the night I left her crate in the kitchen and she settled without any problems. I don't think by perhaps moving the crate closer to you to give extra reassurance will reinforce her barking and howling as it is after her toilet trip, not when it's bed time, I do think though that it can help to have a happy relaxed puppy
