on Pippas book Total Recall, once the last puppy recall stage us finished (walking away after signal), Pippa then says to start the Basic recall section. As the first part of the basic recall is done in doors, what do we do during this time when outdoors on walks off lead? Just carry on doing the last stage of puppy recall or something else? Thanks for the help.
Hi there. Sorry I can't answer your question on Total Recall as although I have the book I've never actually read it but have trained my recall based upon what I have previously learnt from trainers and what I was doing in 121 sessions. My recall started indoors just short distances and gradually increased until recall was between rooms. At the same time I started recall outside in the garden just over short distances and practiced sometimes from a sit and sometimes just wondering around the garden, the aim only being that she comes when called. Once we could go out on walks I worked at keeping Juno within a distance to me but rarely used her 'formal' recall I would just whoop and holler for her or run in the opposite direction for her to catch up or join me. While you practice greater distance/time indoors or in the garden in the big outdoors you will remain at the previous level and always remember when you increase distance initially reduce duration and then gradually rebuild or conversely increase duration, reduce distance. Once you have a good response you can take in the garden you an take the stage out in to the big wide world. One piece of advice I read a few months ago regarding taking cues into the big wide world of distractions is to expect to fail at your first attempt so don't be disheartened, it's perfectly normal just keep practicing for a few more days and then try again.
