She's 8 months old and generally very trainable, thankfully. She used to be fine, but a couple of months ago she began to get up and walk away before she'd finished peeing, and despite encouragement to stay put (largely ignored) this has got worse. It's now reached the point where a cursory dip is all she's willing to do at the start of the pee, then she just walks off while still peeing. She doesn't seem bothered by the fact that her back end smells awful! Her pees are short, I should add, in case that is relevant.

    Here's my thinking:
    - she's peeing when she doesn't feel much urge (maybe because it's when it suits us rather than when she needs it)
    - she's bored/distracted while peeing
    - it's become a habit
    - she clearly has no sense of smell!

    Should I do the following?:
    - wait until she asks to go, so I know she WANTS to do this and isn't just following instructions
    - make sure there's no distrction around, like our other dog playing nearby
    - crouch down right in front of her while she's peeing with our queue to 'hold' (like 'stay') until I'M happy for her to stand up
    - use a treat/reward for holding/squatting and increase the period of time I ask her to hold?

    Any other suggestions?

Perhaps rule out a UTI with your vet. Her pees being short could be a sign of infection.
