There was something on the TV the other night which I caught the end of about Snails carrying Lung Worm which is left in their trails and when our dogs come along and eat the infected grass this is how they can contract it. I always thought t was Slugs that carried it. Did you know that snails can move 10 meters per night? Did anyone see it incase I have got this information wrong? Helen x
Re: Snails and Lung Worm I saw it on the news Helen. Interesting, wasnt it? Yes, apparently snails can carry lungworm just as much as slugs can... I never use slug pellets in my garden, as I have a large number of toads that seem to deal with them very effectively! But I do get quite a lot of the large Roman snails - however I am very fond of them and just let them get on with things. I must remember to ask the vet which worming tablets deal with lungworm, if any...
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Thanks Karen, does anyone know which worming tablets deal with Lung Worm? we use Drontal. I don't mind snails at all, Thomas has a real thing for them and when he was very little in Reception class his teacher came out to see me after school and asked ever so nicely could I please have a chat with Thomas about keeping a rather large quantity of snails in his school draw, also used to find them in his trouser pockets . He also had African Land Snails - huge things. Helen x
Re: Snails and Lung Worm I used Advocat Helen , you need to either get it from the Vet or ask the Vet for a prescription and buy online x
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Thank you, so I am guessing it takes care of all the other horrible worms too. Helen x
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Not tape worm - you have to do separate pills for that about every 6 months or so.
Re: Snails and Lung Worm So tapeworm is covered by Drontal and of course extra tablet now for Lung Worm. Just bought 6 months of Frontline and Drontal when Advocat deals with fleas and ticks. can't keep up H x
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Oh no, I been using Advocates but vets didnt mention I needed a different one for the tape worm too!
Re: Snails and Lung Worm I made the (London) vet write it down for me! Charlie is on advocate, advantix, and drontal to cover it all! Bloomin' expensive!
Re: Snails and Lung Worm
I made the (London) vet write it down for me! Charlie is on advocate, advantix, and drontal to cover it all! Bloomin' expensive!
Same here, but Milbemax instead of Drontal. Bloomin' expensive times 4!!!
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Holy cow, you guys seem to have to deal with a lot of worms!! Here we get some tablets once a year to give the dogs - don't know what they are called. How often do you dose your dogs for these? I'll have to ask my vet the next time I take Simba in about this. Perhaps our cold winters take care of the wormies for us.....?
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Well, Charlie is just six months so has been wormed once a month - even more frequently by the breeder. After that, I think it is every six months or a year. Drontal claims to kills every type of intestinal worm commonly found in UK dogs and cats. The Advocate is a spot on treatment and although does control some gastrointestinal worm as well, covers: heartworm flea and lice lungworm ear mites Advantix does have some overlap with advocate but in addition repels ticks, sand flies, mosquitoes and stable flies, which is why Charlie gets it in the summer in addition to Advocate
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Heidrun you can rationalise this a bit now as Milbemax has gained a license for lungworm. So it would do roundworm, tapeworm and lungworm, and as Advantix does fleas, biting lice and ticks you could drop the addition of Advocate. However Advantix doesn't do ear mites which might be a problem in working spaniels in the winter so maybe use Advocate when they are working on a shoot in the winter, and Advantix during the tick season? Just a thought....I use milbemax and any suitable flea/lice/tick repeller (and there are plenty) so just two products - much cheaper!
Re: Snails and Lung Worm Thanks for that, Lochan. I don't have a problem with ear mites but ticks are a major problem here on Exmoor, so I will definitely stick with Advantix and drop the Advocate. Thanks again.
Re: Snails and Lung Worm So now the ear infection has gone, and my thornit powder has arrived, and I read this thread, I was just checking over the various packets...and reading the small print. The advocate says: "Brief contact of the animal with water on one or two occasions between monthly treatments is unlikely to significantly reduce the efficacy of the product. However, frequent shampooing or immersion of the animal in water after treatment may reduce the efficacy of the product". It goes on to say that dogs shouldn't swim until 4 days after treatment because the product is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Gosh. Charlie doesn't actually swim but he is in water every day more or less. I wonder if the advocate has been made less effective when I was relying on it for ear mite protection!
