Hello everyone, I have a question about the nighttime trips outside with a new puppy. I'm assuming it's on leash and not just putting puppy on ground in designated spot to pee. At 3:00 in the morning I wouldn't want to have to chase puppy around the yard. What does everyone do in this situation? I understand about not encouraging playtime at that time of night and just slipping harness off and putting her back in her crate. Just wondering what everyone else does or has doe with new puppies. Thanks. Oh, I should have my new puppy within two weeks, just waiting for the phone call ANXIOUSLY!!
When I had Millie she only did nighttime trips 4days, I took the collar and a leash. It was less fuss to get that on and off. I'm curious about this phone call, is the breeder gonna call you when your pup is ready to get picked up?
I didn't. But then it was winter with deep snow and temperatures sometimes below -30C at night so puppy tended to get out, get it done and come back in. The springtime puppy didn't need out at night, ever, at all, never. Now, why couldn't she have been the winter puppy?
I use the harness and leach. But be careful to pull it too much. The puppy can get a bit distressed or more agitated and it will be difficult to put it to sleep. I have a double triangle harness, that is way easier and faster to "dress" than the frontal ones. You just put each paw on each triangle pull the sides up and connect.
PS.: For leach, i meant a home line, i have a long leach and it's not a good solution as they get too much freedom.
I didn't have a harness during the very early weeks so I'd just attach her lead (I used to leave on her collar 24/7) and plop her down in her toilet area. I think I'd dispensed with the lead by 8.5 weeks (we got her at 7 weeks). I never let her muck around on the night trips, we were always in and out, and I realised I didn't need the lead. I just picked her up and in we went. But the toilet area is small, if she'd had access to the main garden it might have been different.
The breeder contacted me today, yea!! He has one person ahead of me and he is in process of scheduling them early in week, so I'll probably be going to get the new puppy Friday or Saturday. The breeder takes people in order of date on deposit checks on puppies. I will probably be choosing from two to three puppies. I guess it's which one steals my heart. To get back to my original question, thanks for your input. When I had my beloved Coco, when I brought her home from breeder, she slept thru night from first night in crate five to six hours to the best of my memory -- 14 years ago--, never had to take her out at night.
I don't get up in the night with puppies. I have them in a pen (so they can move away from their bed to wee in an emergency) and I go to bed late, and OH gets up early. I never once took my new puppy out to the garden at night, and she never had a wee or poo in her pen over night. Mind, at first I'd go to be at 1am and OH would get up at 5am, so her nights were very short. But she was going 8 hours over night by 11 weeks so it wasn't for long.
Thanks everyone. I guess I will decide after getting puppy, see what her personality is like, etc. Maybe I will luck out like I did with my beloved Coco, never had to go out I middle of night, from 1st night in crate without any accidents. Plenty of accidents in daytime because of my bad timing!!
We never had to get up in the night for Bailey either, the fact that the first few nights I kept waking up to check on him made my OH think I was crazy! On the third night I slept just like my puppy! Good luck with your new addition
