Hi all. Bruce is 20 weeks old now and has been brilliant from day three of being in a crate downstairs at night. He's woken us once in 12 weeks with a stomach upset. He will go 7-8 hours otherwise before he wants to be let out. He's just this week started to be more reluctant to go into the cage when we go up at night. We're thinking of moving the cage from the living room, which has lots of potentially tempting wooden furniture, to the kitchen which is old and pretty worn out, so if he chews corners it wouldn't be an expensive disaster. Do we think it a reasonable idea to open his cage and just have the baby gate across the kitchen to give him a bit more freedom to move around? Any potential problems with this?

We de-crated Quinn at night as soon as she slept through the night without needing to go outside - she has option of her crate with door open, a dog bed or our bed and we close our bedroom door for the night so she can't wander. Have had no problems with this set up, as she cries at the bedroom door if she needs out (occasional mornings) and there is nothing for her to chew/ruin. She has some toys and chews that she plays with sometimes if she wakes up early or can't fall asleep haha.

I think your set up would work fine since he has option to sleep in crate with the door open.

Hi all, update time. We moved Brucie's crate into the kitchen on Wednesday night and got him a new adult sized bed to give him a choice of sleeping places. Two nights in and he's taken to it perfectly. No wee, no poo, no whining to get us up earlier than we want. Result :).
