Deer and/or Elk antlers for small puppies

Hi there, Quick question for you all (my favorite experts!)

my little guy is 15 weeks old and is heading into his REAL teething stage. I have discovered Bully Sticks (YAY!), but am also considering getting him a Deer or Elk antler as they will last much longer around my crocopup than the chews. Just need your opinions if he is too young for an antler. My specialty shop that I go to had made the comment "when he gets his adult teeth, he can switch to these (antlers)"... so it has me thinking.

These are reputable sellers and I am confident in the non-splintering of their antlers so I am just wondering if there is a downside to small teeth chewing on an antler.

They are very hard. I bought one once..whoever I bought it for (can't remember) showed no interest so I threw it away. But looking back, I think that was the best thing. Too hard for teeth (puppy AND adult) I think.

Yes agree, although I think you can get softer antler chews. We bought a large chewroot for Bramble, and that has worked very well. She sits in her crate and chews it for ages

Harley has antlers, but not until after she was about 1 years old. I think they aren't good for determined chewers. Harley gnaws on hers and uses her skills to get the middle out!

That looks fab! Have just contacted them in the hope that they have NZ stockists! Although now that I think about it there's no way a root is going to be allowed into the country - insanely strict bio security laws. Harrumpf.

 

You may find stockists under a different brand name if you google "chewroots" or "anco chewroots"

 

We got Holly a large chewroot and she loves it. As she moves around the house she carries it with her. We're forever tripping over it.

 

Yes, Bramble does that with hers...they really ought to have a public health warning..

 

We have two anco roots.

Tatze, Gypsy and Twiglet showed no interest in them at all.

They are good as the dogs can only get tiny, fibrous it's off them.

Hmm now I'm wondering about water buffalo horns ? As Axel chews little flakes come off not chunks. He's had it for a few weeks now just working away at it. But are those considered too hard? The speciality dog store I got it from doesn't sell antlers of any kind but do sell these horns and raw bones and bully sticks

 

Nothing like that in NZ, what a pity. They emailed me back and say they do ship to NZ if it's under 2 kg, but it would never get past the highly trained biosecurity dogs who work the mail centre!
