Cooper, 20 months old, has been leaving his breakfast....Cooper will eat anything so, first posted about the dry food I was feeding him Fromm Gold for Adult Large Breed. Have fed him this since he went from pup to adult. Because kibble had been in a plastic bin instead of bag itself, thought was kibble had "turned"...so tossed it out and bought another bag of Fromm and a bag of Blue Buffalo Adult Duck (no grain). He now is not eating either! He WILL eat at night but not breakfast. Because it has been brutally hot here I am wondering if anyone in the same situation has noticed this not eating thing. I am now getting worried that there is something else going on although he is acting normal in other respects. If anyone has had the same thing happen could you please let me know? Thanks so much.
I know that I eat far less myself when it's hot! But, unless he's getting really skinny and his ribs are showing, I wouldn't worry about him skipping some meals. My Gavin wasn't a big eater and would often skip meals. But he was always healthy and lively, and lived to a happy healthy 15 years. I had to feed him separately from his brother, who was a gannet and would have polished off all Gavin's leftovers! ..
PS - do you put a little warm water on his food? I found that worked with Bruce (another reluctant eater) ...
Yes, I have tried with water (cold though.....will try with warm tonight), tried mixing the 100% grain free and the regular (Blue Buffalo and Fromm), tried one separate from the other. My concern is that Cooper would inhale his food before....he didn't care if my hand was still in the bowl when I put it on the floor! Now he sort of looks at his bowl sideways! Just not like him but, again, I don't remember it being this hot for this long. Thanks for the advice....I WILL try warm water added this evening. Thought I had the problem taken care of but guess our big furry friends like us to worry!!!
The weather has made an impact on Harleys eating too. She has hardly eaten anything during the day unless it is a frozen Kong. I'm not worried as she could do with loosing a bit of weight and she is eating when it's cooler.
Of course, this could be part of it too - your anxiety. Dogs very quickly pick up on how we are feeling and this can affect their behaviour. ...
Glad to know Harley isn't eating great either....sorry! but it makes me feel we are not alone! And Mags you are also right that he can probably sense my anxiety....he is certainly not going to fade away considering he weighs 96.4 pounds!!! It' ME.....so I will cool it from now on and let him decide when and if he wants to eat. Thank you both!
