Is inbreeding coefficient of 9.5% a deal breaker?

Out of my five dogs my cocker Murffi has got the highest COI. I can't remember the exact figure but it is well over 30%. He is a trialling bred working cocker, and a high COI is not uncommon amongst trialling dogs. He must have dodged a few genetic bullets as he is by far the healthiest of all the dogs I have ever had. He is 6 years old now and has only ever seen the vet for his boosters. He has never had a day's illness nor an injury.

But going back to the actual figure of a dog's COI. If you look at the figure calculated by the Kennel Club's mate select it is important to look not just at the figure but also at how many generations have gone into the calculation. That can vary quite significantly from dog to dog and can change the calculated figure enormously.

When I drive around spending my imaginary lottery winnings it involves a kennels and an outcross program ;)

I get to live in a silver birch forest in a small house and have a dog rescue a small one when I win. I think I would like to fund research into outcrossing and genetic diseases and buy my own chocolatier. It will happen soon I know!

I didn't even know this existed  I would love to figure out Axel's but I have no idea how.. He's registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. Can someone please explain how I go about this?

You really need software to do this, and really you already need the dog's ancestors entered as data - 10 generations of dogs would involve an awful lot of dogs! The people on this thread that have looked up the CoIs of their dogs are using the UK kennel club online tool. If the Canadian kennel club doesn't provide one, you could try going back to Axel's breeder and asking if it was calculated when the litter was planned. Perhaps breeders have access to special software, don't know...

You might find someone in your breed club running a database. That might be too hard a task for labs but it's worth a shot. Your breed club probably has someone on the committee looking at health.

Certainly there are a few Clumber spaniel breed databases floating around but it's a much, much smaller breed.

Thank you for the replies. I wish we had a calculator on our kennel club site. But I can't find anything anywhere. Oh well, just was curious
