hi all, Bear is nearly 25 weeks now, and he has only been sick once before, but when I heard the retching noise, I thought I knew what was comming and rushed to let Bear outside. What I wasn't expecting to see, was one of my wife's fully intact winter socks. He hadn't chewed it apart, just swallowed it. To say I am concerned would be an understatement, but the vet said at this stage it's a wait and observe scenario (he has been given a small meal, and now we have to watch and hope he only ate one sock). The worst part is, I can't just go and count socks, as we have always been a family that seems to somehow loose a sock, only for it to turn up later, so a missing sock is not unusual, and no cause to suspect Bear, until now. I have had two dogs before Bear (a Labrador and German Shepard), they were both occasional sock stealers, but never eaters. He is currently looking fine, but then he seemed to be acting fine all morning up until the time he decided to bring up the sock. The sock smelled like it had been in the stomach for a while, so I would say he has been acting fine with a sock in his stomach at least most of the morning. I'm now spending the day watching and hoping.
Lottie ate several socks when she was a puppy. Most came out one end or the other, although one never appeared to my knowledge (and I was monitoring pretty closely ). The worst time was when she pooed a sock, I went to get something to clear it up with and when I got back, she'd eaten it again .
We have sock lock down in my house. Rorys got a gape like a Tasmania tiger and can swallow anything whole. He ate a treat bag with treats. It was a training session it wasn't mine no one saw him take it. We got it back with treats a few days latter when he sicked it back up. some are worse than others id get more vigilant and tidy up everything snd make sure you've got insurance
Hope he's ok. Odds are all will be well. They can regurgitate/pass some pretty incredible stuff. It's a stressful wait though... Lord knows why they have to actually eat them....
Oh Bear, silly boy I remember Ella stealing and eating something from the coffee table once but we had no idea what it actually was! It was a long wait but nothing ever appeared... Good luck with the wait, I'm sure he'll be fine x
Oh dear. Keep watching and waiting, but all should be well. I have played this waiting game several times now - once the object (a lead, which she swallowed whole) was in her tummy 10 days and then she threw it up! All poos, meals etc normal for the full 10 days. How do they do it?? ...
I was just comming here to say Bear just went to the toilet, so all clear, now you tell me this. He seems healthy and happy, so hopefully things will be fine, but it sounds like I will need to keep a close eye for many more days just to be sure. He has certainly taken advantage though, lots of cuddles and belly rubs
Ah - this has happened a couple times in our house! First time Quinn spent the day at the vet getting x-rays to ensure no more socks. Second time we were sure she vomited up the only sock...she used to try and gulp them down the second she grabbed one. We are very vigilant with socks, but she has a nose for the stray dropped on the way to the laundry room...now dances around in excitement if she gets one but no longer tries to swallow. We got pet insurance
