I just wanted to introduce myself and Jet. I'm a new lab owner. I rescued this big boy from the shelter before he was euthanized. I was looking for a companion for my cocker spaniel. I was looking for something SMALL! As I was walking out I noticed this lab huddled in the corner of his cage. I walked over to the cage and knelt down he began barking and growling and I could tell he was absolutely terrified. I hunted down one of the techs and asked about him because there was just something about him that spoke to my heart. He told me they didn't know much other than he was about 2 and had most likely been a backyard dog and had never been touched or socialized in any way. Animal Control found him wandering on the streets and put the noose of a rabies pole around his neck and he went crazy. He obviously never had anything around his neck before and from the medical report the officer admitted to "throwing the lab down to the ground and smacking his head on the concrete multiple times". Eventually he "choked him out" and he was bleeding profusely from his nose and mouth. When the vet at the shelter looked at him, the officer had hit him so hard on the pavement that he had broken his top canine tooth and it was jutting from his upper lip. They surgically removed it, neutered him, and gave him some shots and much needed food. He had been at the shelter for three months and no one was interested because he had zero self-esteem and was obviously going to take a lot of patience and love. I took him on the spot and brought him home. He got a bath and a lot of brushing and over the past three months we have created a very special bond. He doesn't know how to play and it's been so cute watching him run around the yard and then come and sit in front of me as if to say, "hey Cindy, is it OK if I run around a bit?" I have fallen madly in love with him! He jumps at the slightest noise and I've had to move very slow and be extremely calm around him. He's gained his weight back and now has a shiny beautiful coat and is able to come up the steps into the house without me having to go out and carry him inside because he was so afraid. Now he has his naps on the couch and sleeps with his head on my same pillow in my bed! Ha! He can heel, sit, and down and his name. I found this website and have learned so much from the articles about rescue labs and from all the forums and decided I wanted to be a part of your group. I'm going to need a lot of help I'm sure but since you are all Labrador owners you are my heroes and I will be asking lots of questions. Now I understand why labradors are so loved and regret that I never had one before now. Thanks for having me and for meeting Jet and I look forward to making some new friends. Much adoration, Cindy.

What a heart-warming rescue story. It sounds as if you've made a lot of progress with Jet in just a few months. How lucky you saw him.

Hi and welcome from Benson, Casper and Bramble. Casper is our adopted dog from Ireland, also on the pts list, being older, scruffy, nervous, it was unlikely he would have been adopted if BlackRetrieverX hadn't stepped in. We fostered him initially, and then found we just couldn't let him go. He has had some very challenging issues, and probably always will to some extent. His wonderful personalty though just shines through!

Ah, your story is particularly heart rending to me because my first Lab girl was called Jet. It just about makes me tear up to think of that kind of treatment associated with her name. Welcome. My girl was named Jet for the glossy, black, semi-precious stone. Why did you pick Jet for your boy's name?
