Hi, I need some new inners for Hattie & Charlie's plastic beds, has anyone ever used Sheep Skin Rugs? Apparantely they are very good as they repell moisture and are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I am fed up buying the rubbish stuff from the pet shop. Thank you Helen xx

I've never used them, but sounds like they might be good. Wonder if they would wash though? Might smell like wet sheep?!

Sam doesnt have a bed as such, just a massive cushion which he adores, but Millie has a bed, I cut an old duvet up to make a small one and made a cover for it out of an old duvet cover , she loves it x

Cot duvets are a good size. Asda do a 'value' one. And I get covers from car boot sales. Or a normal value duvet is about £6. Or if you need more padding, then cot mattresses are a good buy from some places like Ikea.

If you want the feel of a sheep skin rug, but want to be able to wash it, how about the bottom fitted sheets you get for a people bed? They're like a cream fleece under blanket, but a fitted sheet? These:

    Hi Helen,
We used to have a sheepskin rug many moons ago, our old dog used to lie on it sometimes but it didn't fit in her bed. I seem to remember it was hard to clean and a bit smelly. We have a large piece of vet bed which we have for our dog training class and also use in the sitting room to keep any chewy stuff of the carpet. I like vet bed because it can be washed at high temperatures and dries so quickly. In the kitchen where Bess sleeps at night she has a memory foam bed with a washable (but only at low temp) cover; when the cover wears out I think I'll make her one from the vet bed. It is worth shopping around for because full price it's a lot.
Hope someone else with more recent experience of real sheepskin will come along.
    Alice

Thank you everyone, do you really think it would smell like a sheep? ;) They are suppose to be very good for older dogs and help with joint problems. Don't think I would like them if they smell though. Helen x

My old dog had a sheepskin.

You have to wash them really carefully by hand and brush them a lot (I mean a LOT) when dry or they lose their fluffiness. And they do smell like a wet sheep when wet.

Personally, I'd go for something that's easier to wash. :)

Hang on a minute..... I had a sheepskin that my babies (human ones :D) used to sleep on in their cribs. Honestly Best. Thing. Ever.

Did not smell, was lovely and cuddly for them, warm in winter and cooling in summer, and threw in the washing machine for easy cleanup.

I also have a sheepskin! It used to belong to my son, when he was into medieval re-enactment - now it forms part of Poppy's extensive bedding collection. I havent used it much over the summer, but it was great in the winter. When it got a bit smelly, I just chucked it in the washing machine. No brushing, no problems. She loves it!

    Re: Sheep Skin Rugs

Those Lamby sheepskins are different to the ones I've had because they're shorn to shorten the fibres. No doubt they are much easier to care for :) I wouldn't get an un-shorn one again myself - it can be hard to stop them matting or shrinking (even if you get a really good quality one).

When clean and dry they don't smell - they just smell sheepy when wet.

If you do get one, you are best off to wash them in cold water, using wool wash or shampoo, in a front loading washing machine on a gentle cycle. Or hand wash. You do need to wash them regularly when using them for a dog. Probably for a baby too, I'd guess! :)

Sounds like it could be a good idea then if it can be put in the washing machine. They are supposed to have some health benefits and also draw moisture away from your pet. No synthetic fibres so good if your pet has allergies and also better than the rubbish bedding I have had in the past. Thank you for all your thoughts. Helen x

Also - you tend not to worry so much if they chew the bedding a bit... ::) as you tell yourself it is natural; not man-made fibres.
