What do folks do in terms of bedding? I am thinking of going with vetbed in the bottom of the fabric crate (I will use a fabric crate at first but aware they might chew it!). But I am wondering if I need some kind of waterproof liner underneath at first, or perhaps just put a puppy pad under it? Not sure if a puppy would chew/eat it though?

Is there a tray in the bottom of a fabric crate? You don't want the fabric to get soiled. I have a wire crate. I just put newspaper on the tray and then the fleece on top. Yes, the edges of the newspaper do get chewed. Once she became reliably dry, I removed the paper and put a soft blanket under the fleece.

It doesn't sound very elegant, but honestly when my pups were really little it was easier just to use old towels and wash and/or swap them out every day. My own pups and fosters seemed to find them snugglier than a proper bed. Once they were trustworthy they just ended up on my bed anyway. :)

We used a plush dog bed in a wire crate:

Quinn was always dry in her crate and never a chewer, so I guess it depends on your pup's personality. We still have this bed in our living room and she still sleeps in it with her head hanging off onto the floor.

This is really helpful thanks. No there no plastic tray in the bottom of the fabric crate and exactly I don't want it to get soiled - though it is washable. I guess it will be a lot of trial and error!

Didn't use bedding for puppy for fear he would chew and swallow it. But when I took a fabric crate to Rally training I put a rubber backed mat inside to cushion a bit from the concrete floor. Rubber so it would not slide around in there.

my puppy likes to chew on his bedding which is fine with me, but sometimes he goes on crazy mode and starts pulling it out. PITA to pull it back in place from under the divider. So for the moment he's sleeping on the removal plastic tray of the crate with the bedding folded in half on the other half of the crate to block kibble from landing on the other side of the divider.

Jesse will pull out his bedding and drags it around. When he sleeps in his he pushes it back and sleeps on the plastic tray. We tried a blanket but he chewed a hole in it so we removed it. Right now he is sleeping on the plastic tray at night and naps on our leather couch during the day.

I wouldn't count on the fabric crate lasting very long at all, let alone what you put in it.
I'd say a puppy pad is just going to get ripped up. If you're certain about using the fabric crate, I'd look for a plastic tray to put in the bottom so any liquids don't soak into the fabric. I think you'd be better getting a wire crate from day one, though.

I too think you'd be better off with a wire crate that will have a plastic tray in it. They fold down just as easily as a fabric one. I've always used vet bad which washes well and dries quickly.

Vet bed is great, mine have vet bed and a fluffy blanket which they like to bunch up and lie their head on :)

Fabric crates are useless, they can rip holes in them, even tiny wee pups.

Stanley just had a big fluffy cushion (washable) when he was a baby..

Now he has a big bed but he does what he wants ;)

I forgot how teeny tiny he was though. I miss my little baby :(

I use it for dog beds and mats!

It washes and dries so easily. The rubber backed is the best, not the green backed stuff.
