Noticed today that our 10 week old pup has dandruff. Is this normal or a concern? Anything we should be doing?

I don't think it is normal, although not uncommon as far as I have seen. You might find that adding some oil to her diet will help. When Snowie was a small pup, a vet said to add any oil -- Snowie had little bumps on his stomach (I think the vet called it impetigo). I've subsequently read that you should preferably give omega3s. I give Snowie 4 salmon oil capsules in the morning and 2 in the evening. He has a magnificent coat, very soft, and no dandruff.

I'm sure someone will come along and explain why dogs get dandruff. There might be more reasons than just dry skin.

Quinn had pretty bad dandruff when we got her for quite awhile. Our vet said that all puppies have dandruff and it's more noticeable on black coats and that our cold winters and indoor heating made it worse...she grew out of it and we didn't do anything. Asked the vet about it every time we went though!

Willow suffers from dry skin. I've done all sorts to try to sort it out, but the thing that's really sorted it for her is having her on a relatively high dose of salmon oil every day. I us the Nutrivet one, which I buy form Zooplus as it's quite economical. Environmental issues certainly make a difference; she's far worse when moving from one climate to another, and stressful situations seem to make her worse. I'd try salmon oil and see how you get on, after a talk with the vet, of course, when you go for your next booster.

Thanks all. We're going to the vet this Wednesday so I will ask then. In the meantime, I'll give Omega 3 and also Vitamin E as I've just read that is also very healthy for dogs, and we take both supplements for ourselves anyways so I guess the more the merrier ;)

I give mine either cod liver oil capsules or salmon oil. :)

Be sure to stick to the dose, they can have too much which is not good for them.

Omega 3 fish oil caps fixed the terrible dandruff our old boy Scooby had when he came to us. I'm sure his was diet related as he'd been on a vegan(!) diet before we got him.

Update - Dandruff is gone :) I give him 1 capsule of algae oil with his brekkies (has all of the same Omega epa/dha as fish oil), and he loves taking it which is a plus.
