    Hi,

Just wanted to see if anybody uses a drinking fountain? If so how do you find it and any recommendations? I am looking at one from 'Dog It', as I want Vanilla to drink more. Currently I have to coax her to drink after play etc. If that does not work eventually she just puts her face in the bowl and body slumped on the side for a big drink....

    Thanks
    Sven

I've heard of dogs playing with them and causing huge puddles.

That is one concern I have, given how she used to make a splash when she was in the early stages. Plus some hold about 10L....

If you are concerned mix a little honey in the water now and again, it will go down a treat :)

I had one for my two labradors. Put in the bin within a month. My one was only a cheap £40ish one. Bought to "attract" one of them that needed to drink more due to ill health. Didn't help in the slightest. Seemed to make no more of a mess than a normal bowl though!

It seems to attract a lot of dirt, the bowl was always full of some unknown substance and was a pain to clean. Filters also need to be changed every couple of weeks. I would recommend to stay well clear unless your willing to stump up for a very decent one and you dont mind cleaning out gunk from the filter every couple of days else the water goes stagnant at the bottom as it doesnt circulate and the dogs cant obviously get to it.

I have friends with one for their cats and small dog and while my dogs love it, their muzzles get it filthy in about two seconds flat. And they make a mess with it.

My SIL has one for her Plotz Hounds. When our Labs are there, they empty it so fast that we need to fill it quite often. I think it is easier to just use a large water bowl. We also have a large tea kettle next to the bowl so we can replenish the bowl between complete refills. Ours sometimes play in the water bowl and they did the same thing with the water fountain.

Incidentally we taught Tilly and my neighbors old Sammy, how to drink from the typical human water fountains in parks etc. Some folks are grossed out by them.
