Bailey started lifting his leg about two months ago (7 months) and he's so impressed with himself doing this that on our walks he will cock his leg at everything (even long blades of grass), but he runs out of wee, so he literally is standing there with one leg in the air with nothing coming out , he just looks down at his boy bits and then trots on to the next vertical item to lift his leg in the air again. We always have water with us when walking and he is given plenty of opportunity to drink while we walk, so he's not getting dehydrated he just tries to wee so much bless him.
Is Stanleys castrated? or did you give him hormone inhibitors of any kind ? I have noticed that dogs that are in the two situations above tend to not lift their leg. Got few in the neighborhood that are past 2 years and they still pee like ladies. But the trade-off is that when they start lifting the leg they will want to stop every 2 meters so, be careful what you wish. Rocky started lifting his leg at around 8months but for 2 months or so he was mixing the "techniques" At around 10-11 months he decided he is a big boy and he is now lifting the leg all the time. My previous dogs started lifting their feet at around same age 8-9 months.
Arnie is 10 months and still squats. He does have a good sniff near every structure we get to, but hasn't figured the marking bit out yet
No he's intact and never had anything for his hormones. He's coming up 8 months next week, so there's still a bit of time for him to start. Although, with these stories I'm happy for him just to squat now
When Coco started (an even now) I trill "good cock" when he lifts his leg - I don't know if it encourages him but it gives anyone within earshot a giggle or an eyebrow-raise
Teller was a rescue and has always squatted to pee. I wondered about this at first as he is my first male dog and I've never seen a male who didn't mark. He's now 2 and still squats, I'm assured this is perfectly normal. Now that I think on it, it's actually preferable... none of that stopping every 3-ft on walks so he can mark things up. I also wondered if he would pick up marking from being around other male dogs (some of them intact) JUST as he picked up the lovely habit of mounting. He DID not, lol. I think it might be because he isn't at all territorial but have no idea one way or another.
Duncan is about 10.5 months old and has never even tried to lift his leg and shows no signs of doing it anytime soon haha - he did start marking a lot a couple months ago, but it is by squatting to pee/mark hahaha The only reason I do think it would be nice if he lifted his leg is because we live in the city so he goes pee on the concrete a lot and it ends up getting all over his paws ... so it has been a long 10.5 months of wiping off his paws when we get home!! Even when he is around a lot of grass and grassy areas - like when I take him to the regular park or dog park every day, he finds a strip of concrete or sidewalk to pee on when he has to go! haha such a city dog
Hehe Although, to be honest, it's probably not a bad thing to give his paws a good wipe after every walk anyway. If you think of all the grime on those city streets, if he licks them, he'd be ingesting all those nasty things.
Snowie cocked his leg at 10 months. It was a proud moment for both my husband and me! (Funny that!) At home, if he needs to empty his bladder (rather than mark), he lifts one leg slightly off the ground as if in an arabesque, and then does a good long wee. If he wants to mark the grass in the park, he keeps all four paws on the ground with one back leg slightly cocked but foot on the ground, and then wiggles his body from side to side and moves forwards and backwards, I suspect for maximum coverage of that area of grass.
Just something funny to add about Odie and his leg lifting. Sometimes he gets confused. Is it the front leg, or the back left leg? Maybe I should try the front leg again, nope, well I'm peeing now. I'll try the right rear leg, ah much better, just in time to finish.
Our friends dog cocks how leg on the grass. Then, when he's finished, he does this little hop forward so that he doesn't put his back foot down in his pee! Looks hilarious
