Hi all. Been a while, puppy has generally been awesome but we have a problem with barking when we go to my sisters place. There is a mature female lab there and when we go for supper he has started barking. Barking at her, the air, outside, everywhere. He barks non stop for hours and hours straight. He never barks at anything else. He doesn't bark at the neighbours cows, passerby, for food or to get attention. He might half bark to go pee if we miss a cue once in a blue moon. He doesn't bark to come inside. Nothing. What is going on here?
Could be excitement. My pup doesn't bark much, except at Tatze 'play with me, play with me'. If Tatze isn't in the mood to play I get her toys out and play with her, then she's ready to snooze
Sorry Johnny, I'm not really sure but I'd guess excitement too. He could be trying to get the other lab to play with him. Perhaps try doing a bit of extra training and really tire him out before you go there next time to see if that helps? Could you try bringing him in and popping him in a crate for a bit to try and break the cycle? Maybe try to separate the dogs for a bit to see whether he's barking at the environment or the other dog? If you can narrow down the trigger it might be easier to work on a fix.
Do the two of them play at all? I agree that it's probably excitement, Rigby (our Pointer puppy) barks incessantly at Teller when he wants to play. Has he been socialized around other dogs? I would suggest a few things... One is to wear him out with lots of play before you go to your sister's house; they say a tired lab is a happy lab and this also applies to puppies. I don't know if you guys have 'puppy groups' in the UK but that could be an option if he hasn't been around a lot of other dogs. You could also try and address the behavior by separating them as soon as he starts his barking.
So after a bit of trial and error, we now bring one Duggans beds with us now. When there is nothing going on he just goes to it and rests until something exciting happens. Who knew. Lol
