David and I have just had a lovely Indian take away, I heard a rustling from the kitchen so I went to investigate only to find Hattie yes Hattie has just taken from the counter and eaten 2 onion bhaji's, should I be worried? I was sure I had cleared them away Thank you xx
How did you manage to have leftovers?! I hope all is okay. Could you phone a 24-hr animal hospital and ask for advice? I understand onions can be toxic but perhaps you need a lot more over time to have a serious effect?
I honestly wouldn't know sorry. I would call the vets to be on the safe side. Is she ok in herself? X
Willow ate an onion bhaji when she was nine months. No effects at all. Call the emergency vet and have a chat, but I'm sure she'll be fine.
She only ate them about 30 minutes ago and she's OK. I have just looked it up and the ASPCA says a dog would have to consume 15 grams of onion per kilo of body weight so Hattie would have needed to consume 375g so I think she will be alright. xx
Ah Willow has a liking for curry too I suppose it's not dense like a raw onion, lots of space in those bhaji! Thanks Fiona, I'm just a worry wart It's a first!
Call the vet then keep a close eye for any changes, especially lethargy. Be ready to rush to the vets. I'm sure all will be well 'tho. xx
I looked it up. Finn ate an union at the age of 18 month. I called the emergency vet who didn't know it was poisonous. She called me back after she had gotten some advise. an union is poisonous for 15gr per kg weight. Finn weighed 31kg, so he had to eat more then 450 gram of union before it would be poison!
This is so reassuring as I completely freaked out when storm had possibly eaten (wasn't even sure if it was that or a grain of rice) a tiny chopped up piece of onion from a curry that I forgot to clear up from under the table! I'm so glad I didn't call the emergency vet on that particular occasion! I did wonder how dogs of days gone by had survived as pretty sure my family used to give dogs any leftovers when I was younger. Stews etc. Most of my friends I talk to have no idea onions are toxic to dogs!
Thank you everyone for your concern. After a sleepless night for me NOT Hattie! all is fine, she didn't have any symptoms. I phoned the Vet who said everything should be OK as she didn't eat very much but if I was worried and she became ill to call and they would do a blood test. She didn't slow down, stop eating, no lethargy and is just Hattie. So relieved xx
Every time this post shoots up to the top of my "new posts" list I instantly think "mmmm... Onion bhaji... Must have Indian soon"
