We have a 5 month old fox red lab who is lovely.

However apart from the usual mouthing etc we have an issue following walking or training, he is fine when out but when he get back home he goes absolutely mad, he barks, and jumps up and goes to play bite us, his tail is wagging but he is, even at 5 months quite a powerful dog, and I don't know how to stop him doing this, we have tried to shut him away, but getting him into a seperate room to do this is difficult he totally ignores us.. usually he is really good. What can we do to curb this behaviour?

Hi and welcome to the forum from me Helen, Hattie 6 years and Charlie 2 3/4 years.

How long are you walking your puppy (what his name)? Maybe when you get home you could do a short spell of obedience just sits, paw, retrieving etc. just to re-focus him. I am a novice but I am definitely sure someone more experienced will give you great advice. It's all perfectly normal behaviour in a young exuberant pup. Chin up. Helen x :)

Hello and warm welcome from me and mine too .
Same question as Helen really, how much do you exercise him for as it sounds like he may be over tired , just as children sometimes get and dont know what to do with themselves ?

Hello, welcome from me and Charlie - nearly 7 months choc boy.

Charlie does the same, I'm afraid I bundle him into his pen for 10 mins with a veggie chew (regardless of how excited he is, he'll go into his pen for a veggie chew) that's all it takes for him to settle. I think he is just over excited from the walk. He does it regardless of whether the walk has been long or short....

A welcome from Lilly and myself.
I would go for the over-tired theory as well.
Do you have other issues regarding control and obedience that might go hand in hand with this?
We would love to hear more about you and your foxy boy :)

ooh i love a red fox, got one myself!! i think they get post walk adrenalin rushes.... my two often have a huge hooly when they get in from a walk...indeed did so this morning and they had a Bank Holiday two and a half hour thunder through the hills but still had a massive play fight and chasey game when they got back..

Charlie drove me a little nuts this morning - in fact, he still is...it's supposed to still be his morning snooze, but he is prowling around, looking for something with which he can create mischief. I think there is something in the point that if you rely on walks to calm them down, what happens in the end is they get fitter and fitter and are still full of beans when they come back....that is definitely what is happening to Charlie, I think.

That's true Julie. I call it the 'vicious circle of dog fitness'. The more you take them out for walks and runs, the fitter they get and the more exercise they need to get rid of all that energy! ::)

i agree. my two are bloomin fit as fiddles now, and what really tires them out is a thinky session. half an hour of tricky retrieves and they come home and sleeeeeppp...cuillin in particular seems to have boundless physical energy and long walks/runs, while great fun for all of us, wont always make her contented, and she will still pace about....she needs her noodle engaged too. i mix up their walk lengths now, some days they get much shorter walks but we spend a lot of time doing gundoggery things, we might only cover a couple of miles but they are mentally busy throughought and i think cuillin in particular much prefers these....

Same here Debsie - half an hour training will exhaust my girl, whereas she will run around for hours and still be ready for more...

    Re: bad behaviour after excercise

    Hi guys,

Wow, thanks for all your kind comments and welcoming us to the forum.

Our Fox Red Lab is called Gibbs, he has a good half hour trot in the morning and I have been making him him do some training, sitting at the curb and walking to heel
he is not keen but I am persevering, when we get back he gets a carrot. This seems to work at the moment, and I do the usual training, sit, stay etc every day at home too.

In the evening, my husband is out for a good 45mins he has so much energy, (the dog not my husband lol). I did think he may be over tired, but he also does the same later on
in the evening after he has had a doze, so I now give him a Kong with treats in when he gets like it to try to take his mind of whatever it is that sets him off, he has started getting fruity too.....
he has improved this week but he still ignores us when we are out and it is really difficult to get him to focus when he is looking all around, I know he is only 5 months old
it is just like a battle of wills like you have with your teenage kids, and that was a long time ago, I guess I had forgotten how hard it is.

Also when will he get his big teeth he still has the sharp needles at the moment?

Thanks again for all your comments.

    Re: bad behaviour after excercise

Hi from Lisa and Simba, one year old LabX.....

I found the Kong idea works well for us too. Simba usually has a restless wander after his nightly walk, grabbing items to chew, bugging us to play, etc. He will settle with his frozen Kong and by the time he's done he's worked out his restlessness. Usually ::)

I'm careful to cut back in the kibble, though, so as not to add more calories than he needs...

    Re: bad behaviour after excercise

It was interesting reading these posts, Chloe is just 7 months old, and good during the day, retired so with her most of the time, however, no crate, but around 6pm she goes potty every night, barks all through teatime, this stopped, but has restarted, drives us mad wanting to play all the time, and does not settle, probably more noticeable as with the lovely summer she has been out in the evenings playing etc., in the garden, but of course now nights drawing in, tv on, and we think she is just bored, but cannot keep taking her a walk, and as you all say, she comes back from a walk and we have to let her run around outside as she is hyped up.

Tonight she is barking whilst I am out of the room, that is a new one, although she seems fine during the day.

Our third lab, and the others never barked or destroyed anything, Chloe has just stripped some wallpaper and chewed our nice door which has glass panels in it. Can be put right, but this was done before we got up and before she let us know she was up!!! About quarter past seven.

We were hoping by now she would be settling down, but she seems to be going in the opposite direction.

Fingers crossed for better days to come.

Glad to read that others have the same problems with the tearing round after a walk, she never goes more than an hour at a time. But about two or three walks a day. Good on lead at moment.

    Regards
    Val
