Hi, our chocolate lab Charlie has a tendency to lick our sofa from time to time. But when he does it he also drools excessively.

Is this OK or should we be talking to a vet?

This tends to happen once or twice a day and it isn't always the same spot. But we've noticed when he does to it he's salivating a lot.

Hi Mark, I have no idea, but there have been mentions previously about licking floors and salivating.
Can't remember what the answers were, if any.
    Sorry.

maybe try cleaning the spot with an enzyme cleaner - perhaps he can smell something you can't?

There's a post on the other Lab forum recently about the dog becoming seriously ill from licking a leather chesterfield and getting chromium poisoning. Apparently chromium is used in tanning leather. Other chemicals are used on fabric, like fire retardant maybe, or surface protectants. I had no idea there could be this serious side effect of such licking.

Thanks for the replies. We're getting new sofa's soon so if it continues with the new ones I can only assume a chemical of some sort is being used and is somehow appealing to him.If this is the case I'll find out what chemicals are used and whether they are harmful to him.
