Hi, I am picking up my first ever puppy next Saturday . My daughter is off to university this week :'(. It's a very up and down week. I have called my beautiful puppy Harley. She is red fox/ yellow and I fell in love with her when I seen her. We have brought a cage and lots of toys (and food of course!), so am prepared in that way. I am a bit worried about toilet training at night. Any comments / guidance would be greatly appreciated
Re: So excited Hi Naya and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new puppy, look forward to seeing some photos of her You can find lots of housetraining info in the puppies section on the main site. The links are in the stickies on the puppies board too. Just shout if you have any problems Pippa
Re: So excited Hello and a warm welcome from me , two year old black Lab Sam and our rescue girl Millie Congratulations on the arrival of your new puppy , we all love pups on here With regards to overnight toilet training, its a case of " suck it and see " I`m afraid as they seem to have very differing bladder controlls , some brilliant, some not so good . Obviously take Harley out as late as you possibly can and expect an early morning foray into the garden too , it does get easier as their bladder control improves but its a case of taking her out the moment you go to her in the morning , carry her out so that she has little chance of pidddling on the way out
Re: So excited Congratulations, both on your new pup and on your daughter's start at university! Welcome from me and red-gold Poppy...
Re: So excited Hey there Naya! Welcome from me and Lilly who is a 3 and a bit year old black labby girl. There is loads of useful stuff on the puppy stickies. We just took our son off to Uni yesterday, so you have my sympathies - a pup is a good way to keep yourself busy though ;D ;D jac

Re: So excited
I am a bit worried about toilet training at night. Any comments / guidance would be greatly appreciated
Puppy looks cute and brings back memories from January when we picked our puppy called Poppy up. When our Poppy first arrived we would take her out in the garden about every 3 hours during the night, maybe a bit too often but there was no mess in the house overnight. When Poppy did a wee in the garden I would always say 'wee wee Poppy and ' good girl poppy' she soon learnt what 'wee wee' was and will almost wee on command in the garden on the last visit before bed now that she is older. She almost gets me on my shoes sometimes if I say it while we are stood on the decking This time between garden visits was gradually extended until she could last all night from maybe midnight until 7 am. Now she will wait nearly 9 hours at 11 months old which seems too long but sometimes. Also make sure your garden is secure as a small puppy can escape very easily. In January at about 04:30 in the morning when Poppy was very small and there was about 9 inches of snow in the garden poppy escaped through a small trellis area of our fence into next doors garden, Eeeek ! , with me frantically whispering 'Poppy come' , she did eventually come back which was lucky as next doors gate was locked and I did not want to be caught climbing over a fence with a torch and in my dressing gown at 04:30 and everywhere is so light with snow on the ground.... These first few months are great fun and they go so quickly so enjoy it and take lots of photos and videos etc.
Re: So excited Looking at your photos on flickr: Harley day 1 by ternayacummings, on Flickr I would cover the wooden floor with newspaper as the wee will get down the cracks in that floor. As the weeks pass by have less and less paper with a trail of paper towards the door and the Puppy will soon learn where to go when he needs the toilet. If you take puppy to friends houses be prepared for little accidents
