Harley is a yellow lab who will be 3 in March. He has always been sensitive and clingy but got worse when my husband fell ill with cancer. Although he is now in remission, Harley remains obsessively clingy to my husband and won't sleep downstairs. The main problem is we have had a weekend away and Harley hasn't coped. He is normally ok when left with my grown up children who still live at home so no disruption to routine. We have two other dogs

    Oh dear.
What did Harley do when you left her with your children? How did he behave?

Just wondering if you need other people (yourself, your children) to do more with Harley on your own.
Do you take turns feeding him, not just your husband?
Trying to think of other things.....

My husband only does a couple walks a week, I do feed daily walks training and 2 to 3 clubs a week with him. He does obedience and agility. He is normally happy when left with my kids and doesn't stress when left alone.

So sorry your husband has been so ill, a great strain on all of you. I believe dogs are very sensitive to human illness and our moods, so I personally don't find it out of the ordinary that Harley should be behaving this way with your husband. Keeping Harley's routine the same with everyone chipping in with feeding, walking etc. should help. Maybe I'm too soft but I would let Harley stay with your husband as it's beneficial to both of them and really who is he harming. I know if I am poorly Hattie has to be with me and won't settle until she is, she waits outside the door crying, she certainly makes me feel better having her with me. When I recover she goes back to normal. Just how I feel, not everyone will share my feelings. I hope your husband continues to recover. xx
