Hi everyone. I have a 9 month old (today) black lab. We recently lost our golden lab, he was a month off 14. We have had our little girl from 8 weeks, although we first met her on a visit to the breeder at 20 days old. She was/is tiny for her age, the vet (who has been our vet for 20 years, happened to be the vet of the breeder also, so he had known her since birth) called her "the runt" which I don't like that term. She's just very cute and was little at 3.8kg at 8 weeks. Our little girl has grown steadily over her 9 months of life, but still slowly. At 10 weeks (5.4kg) although she was healthy, active and cheeky, I did have the vet run some tests to make sure there wasn't an underlying cause for her tiny size. It came back that she had an overactive thyroid. There did not seem to be an explanation for this, the vet had never heard of a puppy with it and contacted a specialist who also had never heard of a puppy with it. As she was otherwise happy, healthy, all other bloods were good, liver shunt ruled out, was steadily gaining weight (even though it wasn't as much as "normal"), they decided to leave the thyroid result (after retesting incase it was a false positive). No matter how much she ate, she has had the opposite of a labrador problem of weight gain. I thought when she was spayed that she may plump out a bit as that can happen but no. Now at 9 months, she has hit 15kg. She is just beautiful, she has just had her thyroid results checked and they are back to normal, although it's possible that the overactive thyroid in her peak growth time may be the result of her small size, will never know. She may suddenly take off and get to breed standard, but as we are not breeding or showing her, her size is not a concern for us, provided she is healthy. We love her just the ways she is. She is from a registered breeder and a very reputable breeder, she is from champion and grand champion lineage. She also has her registration papers so she is a pure bred lab. Hi there,and welcome to the Forum , She is lovely ,a very pretty dog.whats her name? My dog is definately on the small end of the scale he got weighed today at the vets he was 24kgs which is what he always stays around.....I can't remember but I think he was probably a bit heavier than your dog at the same age ....my vet even commented today about how he ended up being so little when she always thought he would be huge....he's pretty well proportioned and he's fit and healthy ,that's all you need in a pet xxx Reading your post though you must have had a really worrying time ....so soon after losing your lovely 14 year old to have a puppy that needed so many tests must have been very stressful.I'm glad she has a clean bill of health now,she looks very well settled and loved.thanks for introducing her,looks forward to reading more about her through the boards x Angela x
Kona was a small puppy; at 2 months she was about 4.5 kg. Now, at 17 months she is 28.5 kg (52-53 cm tall). Still, people usualy comment how small she is. We willl have her tryonid checked due to her fear problems and reactivity with strangers, and keep going with training and the desensibilization process. Did your girl have any signs/symptoms?
Welcome from Hattie 9 years and rescue boy Charlie 6 years. Your puppy is gorgeous and you know what they say - "good things come in small packages", well that's what my Mum always told me. As long as she's in good health I can't see a problem x
Hi and welcome to you both. Sorry to hear you've had health issues with your girl, I know how difficult it is. Harley was only around 17.5kg when she was 9 months old. At 3years old she is around 27.5kg. What is your girls name? She is very pretty.
