The dogs had there first fight this evening. It was sort of unprovoked, but there was some reasoning behind it but it was out of the blue really. It was feeding time, as usual, both bowls were up, barley was inside puzzle was outside, i called her in, she came and rushed to her cage (where she gets fed) and barley for no real reason attacked her, there were no bowls of food down, there were no bits of food on the floor, it happened by her cage, which is no way near where barley eats. They have been fine since we have got her, we know we had to watch barley very carefully with food as he is food aggressive towards dogs, not people, but we have been managing it very well, she gets fed in her cage and has to wait until he has finished then his bowl gets taken up and he gets let outside then she gets let out of her cage, barley gets his bowl put down first and he is told to wait then puzzle gets hers put down then is also told to wait then i release then, she goes in her cage and the door is shut, he goes to his bowl and everyone is happy. She is fine physically, no bite wounds, possibly some bruising as he did send her flying when he rugby tackled her across the room but we will see what she is like in the morning. Mentally, at the moment is a different story, she won't go near barley and will jump at any sudden movement or noise made by us or him, she bolted when he barked and cowered away. We are just leaving her alone to sort herself put at the moment, as comforting her would reinforce her being scared of him. We will see how she is in the morning. Thank god it was me who was feeding then not one of my brothers at they would not have know how to deal with a situation like that, it happened very quick but if i had not acted just as quick to restrain barley then there could have been worse outcomes for puzzle.
Re: First fight How worrying for you, I hope it resolves itself, or you find a way to do so. Good luck with it.
Re: First fight Oh dear, poor Puzzle, what a fright for her. I'm sure Barley didn't really mean to hurt her, just to show who's boss. But scary all the same.

[/quote] He almost sort of didn't know what he was doing, it was like he was just reacting without thinking, which is why it just happened so quickly, he just snapped, very unlike him, when he has snapped at other dogs before he has given warnings like growling but this time there was nothing, he just lept on her and she was squealing and making a lot of noise while he was growling and standing over her, trying to mouth her
Re: First fight Oh dear. I've heard it said that most dog fights are more noise than anything, and that mist dogs won't really hurt a puppy. But all the same, it does sound as if Puzzle has had a big fright. Hopefully she'll feel better tomorrow - let us know how it goes between them!
Re: First fight That must have been a bit scary. Good thing that you were there to react quickly. I'm glad she is physically ok. Hope she is able to relax again soon.
Re: First fight She is a bit better today, still very weary of barley and wants to hide behind me or under me :. We are hoping to bump into some dogs on our walk this evening so that has some good associations with them and to check to see if she is scared of them
Re: First fight You did really well Anabelle and kept you r head in what must have been a scarey ,noisey situation.I hope Puzzle bounces back ok and that they become good pals again x

Toys have not been a probelm which we thought that they might but not fights or growls over toys, so barley is sort of learning how to share, well i say share he steals her toys, chews them or destroys them and leaves her too play with all the broken bits

Re: First fight i hope Puzzle is better today...wee soul. if its any help, cuillin absolutely hated brodick when he arrived. she was nine months old and used to all my attention i think she was supremely jealous. she wasnt even vaguely accepting of him and if he as much as walked near her she would go ballistic and growl horribly and bowl him over. while i was happy for her to tell him off if he got in her face, she wasnt allowed to pick on him, though i have to say he wasnt even slightly phased by this mind you and loved her from the minute he saw her. i thought they were never going to get on, it was all horrible noise from cuillin no biting but stll not nice to see. however it soon changed, other than stopping her picking on him i just let things shake down, as you are, and they are now best of buddies.....i did make sure that cuillin got plenty of time with me on her own playing and doing all the stuff we did together before B arrived, probably humanising her terribly but i thought she needed reassurance that she was still my Girl....
