    Hi Gang - new here

I've had my pup about a week. Yellow lab female. Everything has been going pretty good but she started peeing what seemed excessively the last few days (3 times per hour, several accidents in the house). I know she is just a baby but wanted to rule out a UTI, as my last pup had one.

Took her to my vet this morning and they said she has crystals in her urine. 10 days of antibiotics and then Royal Canine SO (prescription food) for one month. Vet said, after one month, change foods altogether. (had been feeding Pro Plan Puppy, which was what the breeder uses).

Anyway.... I am curious on others opinions or experiences with this. My biggest thing is the food. My last lab had allergy issues and figuring out her food was a nightmare. I am also concerned that the Royal Canine SO won't be a high enough protein source for a growing puppy.

    Any ideas???

Hi and welcome ! Sorry to hear about your puppy, but please don't worry about lowering protein for such a short length of time , it truly wont matter at all .Did your Vet give you a good reason to change the Pro Plan Puppy food ? I would pose the question , and if there is a valid reason , then look around for the best puppy food , one with no artificial colouring and flavourings , possibly a hypo allergenic one if you would feel happier with this . If you Google puppy food comparison sites , there are several which will give you a breakdown of ingredients . But please don't worry about the one month of lower protein , it will barely register , and good luck .

Thanks for the reply kateincornwall. The vet just said in her experience to change the diet as the diet was the main factor in developing the crystals to begin with. I just cringe at the thought of hypo allergenic as we had our last lab on it for quite awhile (trying to figure out allergies - itching, ect) and it was costing me $120 per month.

Hopefully this is just a temporary issue. But would enjoy hearing if anybody else has dealt with urine crystals before too....

Hi Corona had crystals in her urine around 12 weeks of age and again around 6 months of age. Interestingly, she has had MANY different infections and is suspected of having allergies also, and is currently on an elimination diet to try and get to the bottom of things. Throughout this time, we have tried a few different foods and went back to some she previously had tried. Both times she had crystals, she was eating Eukanuba Lamb and Rice. Maybe it was a coincidence, but maybe not. The vet wasn't convinced. My vet wasn't very concerned with the crystals, she was more concerned with the very high PH and the bacteria in the urine. She said to run the course of antibiotics and to re-test the urine and that she would be worried about the crystals if they were still present at that time. They weren't. She also did NOT want me to change foods at all until AFTER the recheck so that we could eliminate the food as being the cause, so I guess she was right. Does she have bacteria in her urine, are her WBC high, because if not, it could also be crystals from puppy vaginal discharge which is quite common. Corona still has occasional vaginal discharge when she pees and this can contaminate the sample. Something to think about.

Thanks Jeanine. I've decided to do the prescription food for 2-4 weeks. At that time I'm thinking of changing puppy foods altogether and adding a cranberry supplement called 'Cranimals'

Still at a loss in the meantime. We take out our for potty breaks very often. Like every 45 min and I'm also getting up in the middle of the night for her to relieve also. But again, just this morning I took her out for the 2nd time, she peed, and then literally 5 min later she peed in the house again.

Macy's now 10 weeks old. She was on antibiotics and the prescription food for 10 days, during which the frequent urination decreased. The problem was she was looking very skinny and you could tell the food didn't satisfy her.

Just changed foods to Blue Buffalo and she looks and feels better, her coat is softer, and she is back to gaining weight like a puppy should. Problem is she has started peeing frequently again.

Today vet said she has crystal fragments and ph is at an 8 (down from 8.5). Vet also said she has vaginitis. I did start the Cranimals (cranberry supplement) just a couple days ago

Biggest problem is the frequent urination and potty 'accidents' in the house. (No accidents last week while on the antibiotics).

    Any suggestions please??
